Vietta Gertrude Cannon

Celebrating the Life of Vietta “Gertrude” Cannon Vietta “Gertrude” Cannon, 96, departed peacefully at the home of her daughter, Barbara Gumby in Salisbury, Maryland on May 27, 2024. She was born on January 9, 1928 to the late Calvin Dennis, Sr. and Emma Kelley Dennis in Stockton, Maryland. She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Harry S. Cannon on August 20, 1949. God blessed this union with five children. Later she met the late Isaac Knox, her companion for almost 40 years, and they were blessed with a son, Anthony Cannon. Gertrude attended St. Paul’s Elementary School in Stockton, Maryland and graduated in 1945 from Old Worcester High School on Ross St. in Snow Hill, Maryland. She worked at Atlantic Hotel in Ocean City, Maryland; Buddy Boy’s Poultry Plant in Snow Hill, Maryland; and also as a field laborer for Herman Trader, Jr. Gertrude was a strong woman of faith in the Lord. From youth until her death, Gertrude was a faithful member of Mount Hope Baptist Church. She was a member of the choir in her early years, and she often talked about traveling to various churches where they were well received. She enjoyed going to different places to hear gospel groups. She was a woman of great wisdom and advice. Gertrude was very dedicated to her family and loved spending time with them and telling stories about her life. She enjoyed doing puzzle books, riding out sightseeing, watching birds around her bird-feeders or looking at butterflies around her flowers. She also enjoyed setting and looking out over the water. Gertrude also loved talking on the phone with her closest friends, Lola Lewis, Betty Collins, Janice Conquest, and Esther Dickerson. Gertrude leaves cherished memories with three sons, Harry R. Cannon, Clifton Cannon (Brenda), Lawrence Cannon (Fannie); two daughters Barbara Gumby, Beverly Douglas (Kevin); 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Tyvolia Douglas; three brothers, Calvin Dennis, Jr., William “Bill” Dennis, Samuel “Tobe” Dennis; and one son, Anthony Cannon. Your love, laughs and words of wisdom will be forever imprinted on the hearts you touched. You were truly one of a kind, and we will love you forever. Submitted with love, the Family.
