Shelby Newman

Shelby Angel Newman was born on Thursday, June 27, 1963 in Washington, DC to James Philip Newman I and Shirley Mae Newman. Shelby grew up in Prince Georges County with her siblings Ethel (Pam), Phyllis, James Philip II and Christopher Newman, as well as special brother and sister, Pete and Tracy Smith and special Pop, Thomas (Smitty) Smith. Shelby attended PG County Public Schools and graduated from Suitland High School, Class of 1981. She joined the US Army Reserves in food services. She simultaneously worked in food services at Fresh Maid, where she met her lifelong friend of over 30 years, Tam Tolliver. Shelby continued her employment journey in food service as a Deli Manager at Shoppers, where she was known for her BIG SANDWICHES. Shelby had a son Jamel Levine Newman, born Saturday, June 23, 1989. He was the apple of her eye. Shelby ,TICK, as she was affectingly known, loved her family! No matter what, when, or where, she was there! She was the life of the party, always joking and had that special knack to brighten up a person’s day . Through all her challenges with her health, she always managed to smile and bring us joy. Shelby had a special bond with all her nieces and nephews. Shelby gave her life to Christ and was baptized at New Dawn Baptist Church in 2011, where she met her spiritual mother, Thelma Harris, and sister, Jan Phillips. Shelby relocated to Centreville, Maryland, where she was a member of Bethel AME Church. Shelby fell in love on July 5, 2016, when she was blessed with her only grandchild, Sa’meir Angel Newman. On Monday, May 15, 2017, Shelby was called home to be with the Lord. She leaves many to cherish her memory, including her son, Jamel (Shemalatila); granddaughter, Sa’meir Angel Newman; parents, James Newman and Shirley Newman; sisters, Phyllis Contee (Anthony Contee I), Ethel Newman, and brother James Newman II (Erica); special friend, Timothy Robinson, who was always by her side They were true buddies and he’ll miss her dearly. Additionally, she had wonderful and caring nieces and nephews, who loved her so very much, Shadona Seldon (Nat), Jeffrey Seldon (Kendra), Latisha A. Johnson, Andrew C. Johnson II, Jasmine Contee Warren (Jonathan), and Anthony J. Contee II (Godson), Maya Murphy, James Newman III and Lauren Newman; five great nieces and nephews ,and a host of other relatives and friends. She is clothed in strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.
