Sharon Brown

Sharon Brown, daughter of the late William Saulsbury, Sr. and Christina Elizabeth Brown, was born on February 12, 1951 and raised in Denton, Maryland. She departed this life on November 27, 2017, in her home where she resided with her sister, Dalphine. Sharon was next to the youngest of nine children. She was single and did not have any children, but showed love and affection for everybody else’s children. She helped raise nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Sharon graduated from North Caroline High School in 1969. Subsequently, she had a lifetime career as an Administrative Officer at Howard University where she was employed from December 2, 1974 to January 31, 2014. She loved her job and retired due to illness and moved from her home in Germantown, Maryland to live with her sister and caregiver, Dalphine, in Severna Park, Maryland. Prior to employment at Howard University, she worked for the Department of Transportation and DC Public Schools. Sharon completed 3 years of college in the field of business management at Howard University and several courses of study in leadership at the Howard University Leadership Academy. She also completed courses at the Washington Bible College and Strayer Business College. Sharon completed studies in church management and was previously a member of the National Association of Church Business Administration. She has received many certificates of merit and awards for her professional accomplishments over the years. Spiritually, Sharon accepted Christ at a young age and was a founding member of Christ Church of Rockville, Maryland. She served faithfully for many years in various capacities, including Sunday School teacher; Sunday School Superintendent; Intercessory Prayer Partner; Church Business Administrator; and Board of Trustees Chairperson. She was quick to meet the needs of the church at any cost, especially for the young ladies of the church. While living with her sister, Dalphine, she often attended Empowering Believers Church, with Dalphine and Gerald, where she enjoyed the worship. She loved clapping her hands and swaying to the praise and worship songs. Sharon loved going to church. Sharon’s favorite hobbies were sewing and baking and although she was not able to do either over the past few years, she was an excellent seamstress and baker. She loved making cheesecakes and even received a certificate of merit for completing a cake decorating course. Her family always looked forward to her cheesecakes at family gatherings. She spent her life serving the Lord and others. Sharon loved her natural family and her church family dearly and there was nothing she would not do for either family. She was extremely close to her siblings and nieces and nephews. Two nephews, Gerald and Darin were raised with her and her other siblings, so they were like her sons. She loved mothering her nephew Darin’s children so much, one would have thought Mika, Darin’s oldest daughter, was her baby and that Mika’s baby, Ty’Ajah was her grandchild. She was extremely close to her sisters Phyllis and Dalphine and was especially close to Kenny who was only 3 years older. She was close to her other brothers as well. She was a very caring person who extended herself to provide care for her sister Phyllis. Sharon and Dalphine were like peas in a pod throughout life. If Dalphine needed anything, Sharon was there to lean on. If Sharon needed anything, Dalphine was there to lean on. There were no holidays or family occasions in life that those two did not spend together from childhood on. They loved spending time and doing things together. Sharon was also extremely close to Dalphine’s husband, Gerald and considered him her brother. He loved Sharon dearly, as well, and helped with her care. He was a tremendous support. Dalphine loved life with these two. Having a life with those two together was like having a piece of heaven. The three of them did many things together as a happy family. There was nothing Gerald would not do for Dalphine or Sharon. He was very protective of both as he considered Sharon his natural sister. He loved teasing her and making her laugh to keep her encouraged in the midst of her illness. Sharon’s lifetime friends were Pastor Carolyn Joyner and her husband, Bishop Henry Joyner, Kathy Settles, and Barbara Hammond at her church, and Alma, who was also a coworker at Howard University. Over the years throughout life, she was very close to her cousins, Ann Wayman, Sandra Thomas, and Barbara Freeman with whom she grew up and her sister-in-law, Thelma Wallace. They used to love shopping together. She had other close friends growing up including Patricia Hutt and Michelle Wayman. Sharon made friends easily since She was such a loving person. She was honest, faithful, caring, loving and full of integrity. She was a beautiful person inside and out and anyone who got to know her is truly blessed. After Dalphine lost her husband, Gerald, Ann Johnson, a co-laborer in ministry at Empowering Believers Church, became a very dear friend and lifeline to Sharon and Dalphine. As a skilled homecare professional, Ann helped with Sharon’s care and was a listening ear and supportive presence for her. Sharon became very close to Ann and was always glad to see her. Ann has been a very faithful and vital friend to Sharon and Dalphine over the past four months. Sharon leaves to cherish her memory, two brothers, Gene Groce of Camden, Delaware and Kenneth Brown of Roxboro, North Carolina (Barbara); one sister, Dalphine Cager of Severna Park, MD; a nephew who was raised with her like a brother/son, Darin Brown (Karen); three aunts, Agnes Ellison, Thelma Frierson and Evelyn Frierson; two other sisters-in-law, Thelma Wallace and Ophelia Brown, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, William Saulsbury Sr. and Christina Elizabeth Brown; brothers, William Saulsbury Brown, Jr., Norman Maurice Brown, Richard Tyrone Brown, and Regenald Brown; one sister, Phyllis Edwina Carrol; and a nephew who was raised with her like a brother/son, Gerald Levi Brown.
