Sarah L. Matthews

Sarah Lufa Matthews was born July 4, 1935, and she departed this earthly vessel March 18, 2018. Sarah was the eighth child born from the union of the late Isaac and Hannah Lively. She had been married to John Casper Matthews, for more than 40 years, before his passing in 1996. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Charles, Francis, and John, and three sisters, Mary, Geraldine, and Hannah. Sarah was educated in Garnett Elementary and High School. Her employment career began at Vita Foods, where she worked with her sisters, until its closing. Following the closing of Vita Foods, Sarah spent several years employed by Leeds Travelware, and the remaining years as a vending machine attendant at Campbell Soup, until she retired. After the death of her husband, Sarah began attending the Senior Center, where she made lasting friendships and many, many crafts! She later transitioned to the Adult Day Care Center, where she continued to make even more special friends. July 2011 Sarah moved to Huntsville, Alabama, to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She was soon into the Adult Day Care Center at her new location, which became one of the highlights of her southern living. She loved attending the center and was adored by both staff and clients alike. She was the resident singer and her dance card was always full! Sarah’s other joy was attending Hope Community Church. The services at that church reminded her of the church she left in Chestertown, Faith Unity. Sarah became a member of Faith Unity Fellowship Ministries in the Mid 90’s, at which time she was baptized and rededicated her life to the Lord. Although Sarah enjoyed living in Alabama, she loved coming home for visits. She missed seeing her Maryland grandchildren and her old friends at the center. Sarah also looked forward to the weekly Kent News she received by mail. She always wanted to know what was going on with whom in Chestertown. As well as her love for the Lord and gospel music, Sarah found much pleasure in watching Family Feud and working her puzzle books. She also relished the time she spent with Tonya, having engaging conversations with Marlon, friendly arguments with her son-in-law, whom she affectionately called “Pop”, and talking on the phone with Johnny or Grafton. Sarah will be forever missed, and leaves to mourn, daughter, Vera (Thomas) Shorter; son, Troy (Vickie) Matthews; four granddaughters, Tonya Shorter, Toye Matthews, Keara Matthews, and Zita Seals; two grandsons, Aaron Frazier and Martavis Whittington; one sister-in-law, Eleanor Daniels; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; one special nephew, John Lively; and three special friends, Grafton Butler, Donna Schmidt, and Julie Born; and a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins.
