Samuel J Floyd

Samuel James Floyd, 81, a native of Painter, VA, departed this life on February 24, 2016 at 10:36 a.m. at the Genesis Healthcare Center in Milford, Delaware after a short illness. He was born in Belhaven, VA to the late John W. and Elsie Mae Floyd. He was the third eldest child out of seven. Samuel received his early childhood education in the public school system of Accomack County, VA. He had many jobs; however he was employed with Perdue until he retired in 2006 with 30 years of service. Samuel was a kind, loving, and gentle person who loved life. He was loved by many. You might hear him affectionately called, “Uncle Sammy”, “Pop Sam”, “Duke”, and “Trustee” to name a few. Whenever someone greeted him, he would often reply in a cheerful way, “Whatcha say!” Every now and then, you might catch him doing his little “happy dance”. Especially when it came to expressing how much he loved his wife of 57 years, Mae Nolan. For many years, Samuel loved to go out to eat and travel with the young people. After accepting the Lord over 40 years ago, Samuel remained under the leadership of Bishop Joseph Cooper and the late Mother Gloria Cooper at Emmanuel Pentecostal Church of God. He was a dedicated member and fulfilled his role as a Trustee. Samuel drove the church bus for many years. In fact, he and his wife Mae often went to pick up youth in the community and would bring them to church. He was one that the Pastor could depend upon to carry out any task that was put before him. Today he is known as one of the pillars of the church and the community. “Uncle Sammy” as he was respectfully called, was greatly respected and well loved, and he loved to make people laugh as he had a great sense of humor. Even during his illness, he did not cease to bring a smile to people’s faces. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Mae N. Floyd; one birth daughter, Cynthia Floyd of Dover, DE; many adopted daughters, Gloia Cartwright, Deborah Harris, Evetta Jackson, all of Felton, DE, Lynne Williams, Debra Kinsey, and Laverne Cubbage, all of Dover, DE; four brothers, John W. Floyd (Louise), of Camden, DE, Nathaniel Floyd (Annee) of Smyrna, DE, Solomon Floyd (Martha) of Baltimore, MD, Richard Collins (Virginia) of Nassawadox, VA; two sisters, Rhina Mae Johnson of Dover, DE and Viola Andrews of Philadelphia, PA; a special adopted son, Kenneth Cartwright, Jr.; adopted grandchildren, Kenneth Cartwright, III and Kenderlyn Cartwright-Turner (Leon); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
