Portia Delores Wright

PORTIA’S JOURNEY... Portia Delores Wright was born on March 2,1962 to the late Rufus H. Wright and Delores Selby Wright. She was called to her eternal rest at the age of sixty (60) on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at Tidal Health Peninsula Regional Hospital in Salisbury, Maryland. Portia spent her childhood surrounded by loving parents, family and friends in Oriole, Maryland. She received her formal education in the Somerset County public school system and graduated from Washington High School in 1980. After graduation, she was employed for several years in the Materials Management and the Environmental Services Departments at Peninsula Regional Hospital. She also worked part-time in the Environmental Services Department at Salisbury State University. Portia later transferred to the Somerset County Detention Center in Princess Anne, Maryland, where she was employed for several years as a correctional officer until her early retirement due to illness. Portia was a devoted mother and grandmother who received much joy while in the presence of family and friends. She was without a doubt “the life of the party,” always the practical joker, the prankster, the most daring one!! Her greatest pleasure was waiting and watching for your reaction to whatever she had just said or done. Her favorite pastime was sitting on the porch, eating dozens of steamed crabs and corn. Portia never met a stranger. She loved life and laughter as was evident in her quick wit and jovial personality. Her goal was to make you laugh and make you feel you always had her undivided attention. Portia received her religious foundation at St. James United Methodist Church in Oriole and was a member of the Oriolettes gospel group. In later life, she was a member of Grace UMC in Venton, MD and Trinity United Methodist Worship Center in Princess Anne, MD. Portia later transferred her membership to the St. Charles Macedonia Charge under the pastoral leadership of Reverend D’Angelo Johnson. She was also a devoted member of the Descendants of the Oriole Community, an organization dedicated to the maintenance and care of the St. James Historical church grounds and cemetery. Portia is survived by: one loving and devoted son, Darius Jones of Oriole, MD; three grandchildren, Steven Smith, Jr., La’Kai Jones and Aamani Jones of Hebron, MD; four sisters, LaVerne Wright of Princess Anne, MD, Dorethea (Wayne) Johnson of Oriole, MD, Emma Wright of Salisbury, MD and Patricia Johnson of Princess Anne, MD and one brother, Rufus (Krystal) Wright, Jr. of Princess Anne, MD; three aunts, Sylvia Jones of New Castle, DE, Joyce (Jesse) Jones of Oriole, MD and Brenda Selby of Princess Anne, MD and one uncle, Arthur (Wendy) Selby of Millsboro, DE; nieces and nephews, Daronn, Carlus, Corey, Kerry, Tremont, Kia, and Keiosha; three great nieces, Korrie, Kreed, and Kori; one godson, Charles Meyers, Jr.; a special cousin, Markhanna (Sereena) Wright of Chance, MD; a special neighbor and friend, Dollie Wallace, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
