Mary Edith Smith (Dennis)

Mary E. Smith, the daughter of the late Willie L. Dennis, Sr., and Mary Mumford, departed this life on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at her home in Bridgeville, Delaware. Mary was born in Reids Grove, Maryland, on Friday, September 13, 1929. She was 88 years old. Mary, who was affectionately known as "Mom Murky”, was educated in Dorchester County Maryland Public Schools. Later she met and married Clemon L. Smith, Sr. "Mom Murky" worked hard in various capacities such as babysitting, domestic work, Oak Grove Tomato Plant and Delaney's Company, which is now known as, Delagra Corporation in Bridgeville, Delaware. Mary gave her heart to the Lord and began attending Refuge Temple Revival Center in Seaford, Delaware for a great number of years, under the leadership of Pastors Ethel and Leon Williams. Prior to her death, she attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Bridgeville, Delaware, where Bishop A. Dean Evans is the pastor. "Mom Murky" was known as the mother of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and she sang in various choirs including the Mt. Olive Specials and the Mixed Choir. Mom Murky was also the church pianist. During her spare time, she loved family gatherings, where she prepared dinner and made her famous sweet potato pies and dumplings. Her heart was happy to see her family come home and have bar-b-ques with all the grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved going to the Golden Corral Restaurant after church, shopping at the Goodwill, playing the keyboard, singing with the family and friends, riding out with Latasia and her children and playing dodgeball and baseball. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Clemon L. Smith, Sr., to whom she was married for 67 years; her mother and father, Mary Mumford and Willie L. Dennis, Sr., two sons, Michael and Howard Smith; two, grandsons, Shawnpa Sampson and Charles E. Smith, Jr.; one great grandson, Tayvion “Tigger” Sykes; brother, Willie L. Dennis, Jr.; sister, Betty L. Pittman; father-in-law, Moses Smith and mother-in-law, Lillie Smith. Mom Murky leaves to cherish her loving memories, Clemon L. Smith, Jr. and James L. (Viola) Smith, Sr., all of Bridgeville, Delaware; Marvin A. (Gloria) Smith, Sr., of Greenwood, Delaware; Charles E. (Alberta) Smith, Sr.; Eugene D. Smith and Brenda L Smith, and Darnell (Evette) Smith all of Bridgeville, Delaware; two sisters, Cassie Mae Butler of Preston, Maryland and Gloria Cook of New York; two, brothers, James L. Dennis, Sr., (Janet) of Greenwood, Delaware and Sammy Dennis of Salisbury, Maryland; 42 grand children; 167 great-grand children; seven sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. She had close friends whom she loved dearly such as: Sis. Sarah Williams, Sis. Lillian Taylor, Sis. Betty Carter, Sis. Tillie Bell Faulk, Mother Lina Mae Horne and the late Sis. Mary L. Speight. "Mom Murky" was a babysitter for many of the children in Bridgeville and she loved each one of them in a special way.
