Marjorie Dolores Fisher

Marjorie, affectionately known as “Dee Baby” or Dolores, was born in Seaford, Delaware on Wednesday, February 1, 1933, to the late Marshall and Emma P. Greene. Marjorie was a loving mother and grandmother. She loved God, was devoted to her family and cherished her friends. The angels surrounded Marjorie and she took flight to her heavenly home on Wednesday. September 19, 2018. Marjorie received her formal education from Paul Laurence Dunbar School in Laurel, Delaware. During her 12th grade year, she attended Delaware State High School in Dover, Delaware. Upon graduation, she matriculated at Delaware State College, now Delaware State University, in Dover, Delaware, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. While attending Delaware State College, she was voted Miss Freshman, Miss Sophomore, and Miss Junior. Marjorie continued her studies at New York University (NYU) and the University of Delaware, receiving a plus 30 master’s equivalent. Marjorie was united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, the late Mayor Roger C. Fisher, on September 1, 1956. In 1988, Mrs. Fisher became the first African American “First Lady” of Laurel, Delaware a position she held in high regard. Mrs. Fisher’s career as an educator encompassed 37 years. In 1954, she became an elementary school teacher at the Paul Laurence Dunbar School in Laurel, Delaware. At the onset of integration, she began teaching 2nd grade at North Laurel Elementary School, where she remained until her retirement in 1991. She always emphasized education and it’s importance. Mrs. Fisher was an avid reader and would often be seen at the library, telling children that a good education began with a good book. Marjorie was a lifetime member of the National Education Association (NEA) and the Delaware State Education Association (DSEA). In addition to work affiliations, she was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Queen of Sheba Chapter #4, St. Matthew’s Grand Chapter, Delaware. Deaconess Fisher, ordained by Bishop Richard Norris, under the pastoral care of Reverend Sharon C. Morgan, was a faithful member of Mt. Pisgah A.M.E. Church in Laurel, Delaware. She was humbled and blessed by the position. As a lifelong member, she held various offices and memberships. She most enjoyed serving as the Homecoming Chairperson and relished in contacting community members and obtaining food for the services. Missionary Marjorie, as her family teasingly called her, believed her life’s calling was to reach out to persons in the community to ensure their health and well-being and making sure they were not in need. Her civic journey was through education, her family journey was through the growth of her children and grandchild and her religious journey was through her love of God and helping others. We will always remember the way in which she showed love, caring and compassion to everyone in her presence. Marjorie’s beautiful journey will forever be cherished in the lives of her children, Robin Fisher-Cornish (Otis) and Terri L. Fisher, all of Laurel, DE; one granddaughter, RogJenéa “The Baby” Fisher, also of Laurel; one uncle, Ira Barnes of Laurel, DE; one aunt, who was like a sister, Shirley G.
