Marcus D. Phillips

Marcus Delephe (Del-a-fay) Phillips departed this life on Wednesday, July 17,2013 after a short illness and recuperative efforts at Silver Lake Center in Dover, Delaware. As a young man in his early thirties, he married Fannie Burke of Sylvania, Georgia and from that union came one son, Cleveland. Marcus' wife died in 1994, shortly after celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. He leaves to mourn his passing one son, Cleveland B. Phillips and daughter-in-law, Connie Phillips of Dover, and a host of family members who have celebrated "The Scott-Phillips Family Reunion" the third weekend in July for the last 83 years. Marcus was born on March 8, 1910 in Tarboro, South Carolina to John and Ellen Phillips. He was one of nine children, three boys and six girls. All of his siblings preceded him in death, and he mourned the passing of his only granddaughter, Janice, in 1984. Marcus enjoyed living and loved people. His favorite word of wisdom was, "Trust in the Lord and pray and He will take care of you." Concerning his longevity, he was known to say that he wasn't old - just been around for a long time. He began his career in the U.S. Postal Service as a temporary postal worker in Savannah, GA. Later on after working on the railroad for a time, he became permanently employed at the Post Office in Harrisburg and served as a letter carrier/clerk for over thirty years. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1987. Marcus, known affectionately as M.D. or Deacon Phillips, lived in Harrisburg, PA for over 60 years and maintained his home there until he was 98 years old when he moved to Dover. Deacon Phillips was one of the founding fathers of the Deacon's Alliance of Harrisburg and Vicinity and attended their annual functions whenever possible. He is a member of the United Baptist Church of Harrisburg, PA where he served as a Deacon for over 50 years and chairman of the Deacon Board for 30-plus years. Since moving to Dover, he has worshipped at the Calvary Baptist Church where Reverend Dr. Richard M. Avant is the pastor. Numerous members adopted him as a special friend and were there to accommodate him in any way possible. Many of Calvary members celebrated his birthdays beginning with 99-102. The 103rd was held in Savannah, GA.
