Lois Bernice Butler (Johnson)

Lois Bernice Johnson Butler departed her life on Thursday, November 8, 2018, in Chestertown, Maryland. She was born on April 11, 1943, in Chestertown, Maryland, to the late Anna Louise Lindsey Johnson and the late Allen Melvin Johnson, Sr. Bernice attended Henry Highland Garnet High School and graduated in 1961. As a teenager, she worked at a summer camp for children with special needs. At the age of 16, she travelled to New York for a summer to work as a nanny in New Rochelle, New York. While there, she also took in all of the sights of the Big Apple. Bernice was employed at various factories which included Vita Foods, Campbell Soup Company, and Rex Foods. She then became employed with Eleanor Purnell until she retired in 2003. On March 10, 1962, the late Reverend C. R. Bryant joined Bernice and Edward “Eddie” Earl Butler, Sr., in holy matrimony. She was born into the Emmanuel United Methodist Church family where she attended Sunday School, sang in the youth choir, was a Junior Usher, and served on the Methodist Youth Fellowship. As a member of Asbury United Methodist Church (Georgetown), she also served as an usher. Her service to the church throughout her adult life continued at Emmanuel UMC as an usher, member of the United Methodist Women, Chancellor Choir, Souls of Faith Choir and 100 Voices Choir. Bernice was a woman deeply rooted in the spirit and the word of God. On numerous occasions she was called upon by other church families to offer powerful words of prayer as part of their special services and programs. She enjoyed going to church, reading the Bible, spending time with family, shopping for clothes and pampering herself with regular appointments for her hair, eyebrows and pedicure. She adored her nieces, nephews and grandchildren. She also enjoyed participating in Zumba and Yoga classes. What brought her the most joy was her mother-daughter time with Lori during their weekly lunch or dinner and talking on the phone each and every day. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, Anna and Allen Johnson; husband, Edward “Eddie” Butler, Sr.; sons, Edward “Bino” Butler, Jr. and Rondal Butler; and daughter, Marlo Butler. Bernice leaves to mourn her daughter, Lori Butler Perry and son-in-law, Tony; grandchildren, Damione Butler, Shamyia Butler, Sharay Butler, Tyrone White, Tyrell White and Charnita Johnson; great-grandchildren Damione Butler, Jr., Brooklyn Butler, Brandon McGuire and Cameron Browne; brothers, Allen Johnson, Jr. (Ruby); sisters, Irene Blake and Christine Burke; brothers-in-law, Remus Butler (Dorothy) and Franklin Butler, Sr. (Wynee); sister-in-law, Sadonia Gilbert; godchildren, RaShaund Burke, Latoya Burke, Kierra Burke and Michaela Miller; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
