John Leon Jones

John’s Journey John Leon Richard Jones was born on July 29, 1938 to the late Ina and George Henry Jones. He was a 1957 graduate of Somerset High School. John was joined in matrimony to Portia Ocenus Jones in 1960. Two children were born through this union. John received his Christian formation at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee. He currently was a member of Higher Hope in Christ where he was Vice President of Trustee’s, a member of the Finance Committee, Parking Ministry, Pastor Parish Relations and was recognized as a corner stone of the church. John was a quiet, gentle and dedicated husband, father, brother, uncle and cousin. Spending time with his family was his favorite past time. As a home-body, he loved surrounding himself with his nephews and family. He retired from a supervisory position at Salisbury University, but discovered there was much more he wanted to accomplish. Therefore he discovered his niche’ at Pohanka where he was lovingly referred to as “Legend.” He leaves to celebrate his memories: a devoted wife, Portia; daughter, Mona Lisa (Alphonso) Henry of Salisbury, Maryland and son, Gregory Miller, Sr. of North Carolina; granddaughters, Logan Henry of Salisbury, Maryland, Tasha Jones of Crisfield, Maryland and Marshe’ Jackson of Virginia; grandsons, JaMarr (Anika) Jones of Baltimore, Maryland, Jon Derrick Jones of Fruitland, Maryland and Jordan Jones of Princess Anne, Maryland, Evan Henry of Salisbury, Maryland, Tremain Miller of Virginia and Gregory Miller, Jr. of North Carolina; sisters, Alma (Charles) Bolden of Cambridge, Maryland and Jennifer (Anthony) Williams of Delmar, Maryland; his brother, Albert “Billy” (Nealette) Jones of Cambridge, Maryland; sisters-in-law, Retta Jones of Princess Anne, Maryland, Maxine Williams of Syracuse, New York, Bert (David) Williams of Salisbury, Maryland, Brynda Martin of Syracuse, New York, Janice Penni (Ike) Humphrey of Deal Island, Maryland and Gail (Jerome) Pleasant of Randallstown, Maryland as well as a number of great-grandchildren, dedicated nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding John in death were his son, John Derrick Jones, brother, Floyd Jones and sister, Beatrice Wheatley.
