A Time To Be Born John Henry Holmes, Jr. was born on Monday, March 8, 1943 in New Brunswick, NJ to the late John Henry Holmes Sr. and Della Mae Washington-Holmes. A Time To Plant Affectionately known as “June Bug”, he attended the Manalapan Township School District in Englishtown, NJ. John was a member of the Laborers’ International Union of North America until he retired in 2006. In 2014, he was recognized for 50 years of outstanding achievement with his membership gold card. A Time To Build On Saturday, August 15, 1998, John was united in marriage to Helen Jean Garner-Holmes in Newark, NJ. He joined and became a member of St. Paul Life Center in Newark, NJ under the leadership of his close friend, Bishop Hilton Rawls, Sr. and Lady Amanda Rawls. In 2014, John moved to Felton, DE and became a member of Jesus Love Temple in Milford, DE, under the leadership of Pastor David A. Shockley, Jr. and Lady Myrna Shockley. John enjoyed fishing and shooting pool. He looked forward to attending the monthly JLT Men Prayer Breakfast. John was respected and loved by all who knew him. He acquired the nickname “smiling John” and to his grandchildren he was known as “Pop Pop”. John loved his dog, Oscar, who he would refer to as his baby boy. A Time To Rest On Sunday, June 5, 2016, with his wife and good friend, Pastor Troy Dennis, at his side, John answered the Master’s call and took off his work clothes and took his heavenly flight. A Time To Reflect Deacon Holmes leaves behind a lifetime of love and precious memories. John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Della Holmes, Sr.; siblings, Willie Holmes and Idella Green; his son, John Holmes, III “John John”; mother-in-law, Cleora Thomas and brother-in-law, Curtis Walker. A Time To Live On John’s memories will live on through his wife, Helen J. Holmes; two daughters, Veronica and Valerie Holmes; four sons, Darnell Holmes, Paul Garner, Nathaniel (Shekia) White and Antwan White; 19 grandchildren; two brothers, Johnny (Anita) Holmes and Bobbi (Sharon) Holmes; sisters, Ella Mae (Robert) Dotson, Cathy Walker and Lessie Mae (Gregory) Hodge; three brothers-in-law, Calvin Hunter, Joseph and Anthony Cogdell; two sisters-in-law, Regina Davis and Izola (Richie) Green; Pastor David A. Shockley, Jr. (1st Lady Myrna) & JLT Church Family; Bishop Hilton Rawls, Sr. (1st Lady Amanda) & St. Paul Life Center Family; Pastor Troy (Sandi) Dennis; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; as well as a special adapted son, John Impalia and man’s best friend, his dog, Oscar.
