Jane A Butler

Jane’s Life and Legacy Jane A. Washington Butler, beloved mother, sister, and friend, passed away on Monday, March 17, 2025 in Jersey City, New Jersey. She was born on December 25, 1958, to parents Leon Roland Cottom and Peggy (Green) Washington. From infancy, John W. and Edna A. Lofland raised Jane like their own child and as a sister to their children, John Lofland, Jr., James Lofland and Ruth Lofland (Staten). Jane received her early education in Hurlock, Maryland, and graduated from North Dorchester High School in Hurlock in 1976. She later moved to Easton, Maryland, where she met and married Stanley Butler, Sr. From their union, she was blessed with a son, Stanley Butler, Jr. Jane eventually settled in Jersey City, New Jersey, where she resided for over twenty (20) years. In Easton, Maryland Jane was a talented seamstress by trade and took great pride in her work. In Jersey City, she worked at the Hudson County Planning Board and Hudson County Consumer enterprise. No matter where she resided, Jane always had a deep love for animals and was known for her compassionate efforts in rescuing and caring for them. Jane was preceded in death by: her husband, Stanley Butler, Sr.; parents, Leon Roland Cottom and Peggy Green Washington; the parents who raised her, John W. and Edna A. Lofland; her grandparents, James H. and Maryellen Thomas; uncles, Howard Cottman, Oscar Cottom and John Cottom; aunts, Helen Cottom Peterson and Magdeline Cottom; sister-at-heart, Ruth Lofland Staten and brother, Charles "Bootsie" Washington. She is survived by: her beloved son, Stanley Butler, Jr.; her Aunt Maryellen Johns (Thomas) Woolford; her brothers-at-heart, John W. Lofland (Irene) of Dover, Delaware and James A. Lofland of Capitol Heights, Maryland; her siblings, Ruth Washington of Florida, Ann Washington of Easton, Maryland, Robert Washington of Virginia and Wayne Washington of Cambridge, Maryland and special friends who were like family, Michelle Dixon, Nyese Riveria, Yolanda Dixon, Jameelia Dixon, Latoia Sweeney, Rosia Cherry, Mrs. Bee, Lynnet Baker, Reverend Stella Banks Ford, Clare Newton, Karalyn Shuler and Nyreese Reddick Brown all of Jersey City, New Jersey. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will cherish her memory. Jane's life was one of kindness, dedication, and love.
