Iretha "Red" Picott

We are all in mourning about the sudden demise of our beloved one. God knew that she had completed her job down here, so He quietly called her home to rest. On June 22, 1945, Iretha was born to the late Herbert Mitchell and Mannie James Mitchell in Fairview, Virginia. She received her education in the Northampton County Public School System. She later married the late Irving Picott and to this union two children were born—Dee-Dee and Juno. Denise (Dee-Dee) preceded her in death. Iretha (“Red” as we called her) grew up in Mt. Sinai Gospel Tabernacle and sang with the Busy Bees Choir. She used to love to sing in the church with her hands cupped in front of her, “When I Wake up in Glory.” Later she joined St. Steve's Methodist Church in Cape Charles, Virginia. Iretha “Red” worked numerous jobs, such as G.L. Webster’s Canning Factory, Kane & Miller Canning Factory, Perdue Poultry Plant, Chic Wigs, and Howmet Casting, from which she retired. In 2002 “Red” gave her life to the Almighty God and was saved, sanctified, and filled with God’s Holy Ghost. She joined New Life Church under the leadership of the late Bishop Lawrence Lewis. She was a very caring and unique person and to know her was to love her. “Red’s” church and her church family were her daily talk. “Red” was preceded in death by her mother and father, daughter (Dee-Dee), brother (Calvin), sisters (Jean and Ida), sons (Anthony and Sylvester), niece (Cynthia) and grandson (Derrell). Those lift to cherish her memory are: one son, Irving “Juno” Picott; grandchildren, Charvon “Lujak” Burton, Charles “Chilly” Burton, Charisma “Crissy” Picott and Irving “Lil Juno” Picott; siblings, Odessa Wynder of Culls, Virginia, Lillie Mitchell-Smith (Vincent), Cape Charles, Virginia, Lawrence Mitchell (Tracey) of Hampton, Virginia, Judy Battle-Pernell, of Pocomoke, Maryland and Audrey Battle of Virginia Beach, Virginia; two aunts, Annette Williams of Fairview, Virginia and Mercedes Sudler of Chester, Pennsylvania; four great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Patricia Mitchell of Fredericksburg, Virginia and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, her church family and a long time devoted friend, Iris Downes Baker.
