Helen Roberta Saulsbury

Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Proverbs 31:30 Helen Roberta Saulsbury, was born on May 9, 1929 in Laurel, Delaware, to the late Joshua and Edith Winder. Mother Helen, (as she is affectionately known) accepted Jesus as her personal Savior at a tent revival, held in her hometown at the age of 20. She moved to Dover, DE and attended First Born Church of God in Christ, Camden, DE, where she served many years. Mother Helen served as a Sunday school teacher, YPWW instructor, Missionary Board and District Missionary for the Church of God in Christ, under the leadership of the late Bishop L. T. Blackshear, Elder Louis Bowers Sr. and the late Elder Butler. Mother Helen joined Calvary Revival Church in 1994, Class 15, under the leadership of Pastor B. Courtney McBath and Co-Pastor Janeen McBath. In 1997, she and her husband moved to Tulsa, OK and joined Higher Dimensions Family Church. Later she joined Victory Christian Center, also in Tulsa, OK, under the leadership of Pastor Billy Joe and Sharon Daughtery, where she served in several ministries. After moving back to Virginia in 2004, Mother Helen rejoined Calvary Revival Church and was confirmed on November 1, 2005, class #35, where she served in the Seniors Ministry. She was joined in Holy Matrimony to John H. Saulsbury on February 14, 1952 and from that union had 3 children. She was employed by a dry cleaning company as a presser for several years. Mother Helen also worked as a bus driver for special needs children with the Saulsbury Bus Company, serving the Ceasar Rodney School District. She later went to school and became a CNA (certified nursing assistant). Later on in life, she worked as a nanny for numerous families across the states. Together, Mother Helen and her husband were foster parents for many years. She had a special love for children and poured into them everything she could to help them succeed in life. She was a woman of prayer and a student of the Word of God. Mother Helen led many people to Christ during her years of ministry. She and her husband would open their home to traveling evangelists and pastors. She had a servant’s heart that followed her everywhere. Mother Helen would come to church with her tambourine ready to praise the Lord. She had many sons and daughters who claimed her as their “mother”. She would always impart pearls of wisdom to those who would listen. She was caring and compassionate friend to many who crossed her path. Mother Helen loved to travel, decorate her home and complete word search puzzles. Sne was preceded in death by her husband, Elder John H. Saulsbury, three brothers, Leonard, James and Joshua Jr.; one son, William Winder (Dorethea), a step-son, William Scott. Mother Helen is survived by her sons, Ralph Winder (Barbara) of Lancaster, PA; John H. Saulsbury Jr. (Patricia) Columbia, SC; two daughters, Artisha Norfleet (William); Shrenea Johnson Tulsa, OK; 3 sisters, Alice Miller, Seaford, DE, Esther Browne, Upper Marlboro, MD and Flossie Hall, Salisbury, MD; one brother, Mark Winder (Margaret) Laurel, DE; two sisters-in-law: Sylvia Saulsbury (Hilton Head, SC) and Anne Saulsbury (New York, NY); one brother-in-law: Bishop Joseph P. Cooper (Camden, DE): 21 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; two special friends Marva Clay and Doris Branch.
