Esther Wright

Esther Alease (Chapman) Wright was born July 17, 1933 in Charleston, South Carolina to Albert and Mary Chapman. She was the youngest of 12 siblings. As a youth, Esther was an active member of Morris Street Baptist Church and was baptized as a teenager. She was educated in the Charleston Public School system and graduated from Burke High School in 1950. Esther met her soul mate, George Wright, in high school. Upon graduation from Johnson C. Smith College in 1954 with a Bachelors of Science in Biology, she and George united in holy matrimony on October 27, 1954. From this union five children were born to carry on the legacy of this loving couple. While at Johnson C. Smith, Esther joined the sisterhood of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated in 1952. She honored her commitment to Delta by becoming a Golden Life Member and serving as President of the Dover Alumnae Chapter. Esther was not only a devoted wife and mother; she was also a dedicated servant of the Lord. She was a faithful member of Mt. Zion AME Church in Dover, Delaware for over 36 years where she served as Sunday School Superintendent and Church Treasurer. She made history as the first female Steward at Mt Zion serving in that role until relocating to Mableton, GA in 2004. In Mableton, she transferred her membership to Words of Faith AME Church. There she served as Steward Pro Tem, Class Leader, New Member class instructor and faithfully attended Sunday school and Bible Study. She worked with dedication and diligence until God decided her work was done. Esther utilized her Biology degree with an exemplary career as a Food Technologist with General Foods (Kraft) and later retired from the State of Delaware as a Microbiologist in 1998. Esther was preceded in death by her former husband, George Wright; daughter, Carolyn Wright; parents and 11 siblings. She leaves to mourn her children; Robyn McCaskill (Dobie) of Tampa, FL; Shirley Y. Wright of Mableton, GA; Verna Bullard (Johnnie) of Valdosta, GA; and George C. Wright (Sherry) of Dover, DE. She also leaves to cherish her memory her grandchildren Jelani Bullard, Kimberly Durant, Isaiah McCaskill, Aaron McCaskill, Kamron Odwin, Lonnice McCaskill, Jamal Bullard, Jovan Bullard, Keon Durant, Ciara Wright, Chanel Wright; 4 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Benjamin Wright; devoted niece Dorothy (Dottie) Wright; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
