Emmitt Cotton Jr.

Obituary Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27 Emmitt Cotton, Jr., affectionately known as “Pop/Uncle/Cousin Bus”, was born July 21, 1927 in Raleigh, North Carolina to Emmitt Cotton, Sr. and Lula Mae Guest-Cotton. He was united in holy matrimony with Viola Waters in 1957. To this union, three children were born. He departed this life on June 13, 2023 at Tidal Health Peninsula Regional in Salisbury, Maryland at the age of ninety-five. Emmitt attended school in Somerset County. He was a member of Samuel Wesley United Methodist Church in Manokin, MD. He formed the Purple Hearts Choir and the Cotton Brothers of Manokin, and managed the Mutations Band. He was very passionate about mentoring, and served as a father figure to many of the youth throughout the community. Serving as the local barber, he cut hair and taught others the trade for many years. Emmitt was employed at Green Giant Canning Company in Fruitland, MD. Afterwards he began driving bus for Somerset County Public Schools. He drove bus #29 for over 40 years. He also cut grass with Cotton’s Lawn Care, LLC after he retired from Somerset County. Some of his hobbies were hunting, fishing, and playing cards and dominos. He also enjoyed spending time at the casinos and the horse races. Those left to cherish his memory are: his two sons, Charles Cotton of Brentwood, MD and Sylvester Victor Cotton (Doris) of Princess Anne, MD; 13 grandchildren, Charles, Jr., Christina, Christopher, Sylvester Contrell, Jenine, Holly, Corrie, Shawn, Shane, Deborah, Phillip, Jr., Jason and Sierra and 27 great grandchildren. Loving memories rest with his sister Ethel Mae Wallace and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and the students of bus #29. Emmitt was preceded in death by his wife Viola Cotton, son Phillip Cotton, Sr., grandson Shannon Cottman, and his siblings, Elizabeth Slade, Anna Robertson, Charles Cotton, Rannie Ward, Evelyn Horsey, Ernest Cotton and Morris Cotton.
