Elmer Reed Jr.

Elmer Reed, Jr., was born in Newark, New Jersey, to his parents Jessie Melvin and Elmer Reed, Sr. He attended public school in Newark, New Jersey. He enlisted in the Army and served his tour of duty. Elmer was a member of a singing group in the 50’s. Elmer was employed with Otis Elevator in Kearney, New Jersey. He also worked for the East Orange Board of Education for 25 years. In the 60’s he was a member of the county committee. After the East Orange Board of Education, he went to work for the Irvington Board of Education, where he retired. Elmer met a beautiful young lady named Aletha Carr, fell in love, and married her. This union produced one son, named after him of course, Elmer Reed, III. Elmer was a strong and vibrate man. If you had plenty food and alcohol, he would love to talk you to death, because he loved food, alcohol and people. If you knew any of the Reed men, the first thing you would notice was their striking resemblance. From grandfather to grandson, one look is all it took to know all four of them were family. For those of you who don’t know the legacy of the Reed men, it’s that they all love to dress to impress - impeccable male fashion at its finest, without a doubt. Elmer joined Mount Olive Baptist Church in 1964. He also briefly served as a county committee member. Elmer had one car that he loved, named Betsy. It was a 1964 Plymouth Belvedere 4-door police car. He loved that car because he couldn’t kill it. He loved boxing, Muhammed Ali, dancing and music. My father was a true father. When I was bullied in school my father gave me a choice - either fight him or the bully. Of course, I choose the bully. So, he drove me to the bully’s house and we fought, I won because I knew I couldn’t beat my father. He always made sure we had what we needed without public assistance. Elmer leaves to mourn, his wife, Aletha; son, Elmer, III; grandson, Eric; sister, Nyeta; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Thank you for raising me to stand up for myself and family.
