Obituary: Soaring Free Like a bird in the sky, on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, Dorine “Duck” Laurenda Johnson found out she could fly. Born on March 28, 1956 in Manokin, Maryland to the late Harrison and Cecelia Johnson, Duck was ready to conquer the world with a fiery spirit and drive. In addition to her parents, Duck lived with her dear cousin Elsie Gresham, who helped shape the woman we all knew and loved. Duck was educated in both Somerset County, Maryland and New Castle County, Delaware. She loved exploring the world through reading, traveling, and music, sharing all she learned and experienced with her family and friends. Duck took pride in anything she did. Working various trades, she found her calling in caregiving. She cared for a host of children and ultimately her parents until their passing. At an early age, Duck’s love for God would connect her to her family church, Samuel Wesley United Methodist Church. Wearing many hats, Duck was a Communion Stewardess, Usher and Building Attendant until her earthly body could no longer contain her beautiful spirit. Duck loved her family and friends dearly and was truly the spark of any occasion, always finding a reason to dance, laugh, sing and play. Duck was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison and Cecelia Johnson, her two brothers, Harrison Johnson, Jr. and Kennith “Ticky” Johnson, Sr. and several aunts and uncles. To cherish and carry on her extraordinary legacy, Duck leaves behind: her loving son, Damien Johnson of Manokin, MD; five grandchildren; five sisters, Alfreda “Freda” White (Walter) of Salisbury, MD, Cynthia “Poogie” McCotter (Henry) of Kingston, NC, Ruth “Tootie” Johnson of Princess Anne, MD, Sarah Pittman of Owings Mills, MD and Joanne Corbin (Mervin) of Manokin, MD; two aunts, Francis Niskey of Princess Anne, MD and Grace Hunter of Philadelphia, PA; one uncle, Kenneth Johnson (Carrie) of Philadelphia, PA; her darling, Barry Johnson of Philadelphia, PA; two dear friends, Herbert Cottman of Westover, MD and Rita Handy of Manokin, MD; twelve nephews and nieces and a host of great nephews, great nieces, cousins and friends.
