Corey Jaylen Mumford

Corey Mumford, affectionately known as “ Lil Monk,” “Mumford,” “Lil C,” was born on February 3, 2005 at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. He departed this life on April 14, 2023. Corey attended school in the Laurel School district; however, he attended his 11th-grade year at Cross Christian Academy in Seaford, Delaware. He returned to Laurel High School to finish his senior year and play his last basketball season with his friends whom he called his brothers. Corey was looking forward to graduating in June and then attending college in the fall to play basketball and study Business and Sports medicine. His long-term goal was to play professional basketball or coach at the college or professional basketball levels. Corey was loved by his family, friends, and the community. He made an impact on everyone he met. He loved sneakers and kept his “drip” on point. He loved playing basketball, listening to music, clothes shopping, cooking, and spending time with family and friends, especially his sister, cousins, and his niece Eden whom he called “Monster.” Corey played a vital role in his nieces’ life and was a positive role model for her. He was an active member of the Boys and Girls Club of Laurel, DE where he attended as a member, worked the summer program, and attended the teen program. Corey was passionate about basketball and played at the school level as well as with several AAU teams including Delaware Certified Hoopers, WeR 1, ECE, Shore Elite, Young Bulls, and Ballers for Christ. Corey received many medals, awards, and accolades for his athletic talent with his most recent recognition being chosen to play in the Blue/Gold Basketball Game and winning MVP. He was also named first-team all-Henlopen South and received All-State honorable mention. Corey was named one of the top 15 players in Delaware. Corey wore “00” on his basketball Jersey which meant “zero fears- zero regrets. Bet on yourself double or nothing.” He was so proud of his accomplishments and looking forward to his future. Corey was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandfather William R Horsey, maternal great-grandmother Lucinda Horsey, maternal aunt Tiffany Horsey, paternal grandfather Charles R Mumford, and paternal great-grandfather Alvin Hudson. Corey leaves to mourn his mother Tesha Horsey (Laurel), father Robert Corey Mumford (Seaford), Maternal Grandmother Elaine Parker (Laurel), Paternal Grandmother Andrea Mumford (Millsboro), Paternal Great Grandmother Esther Hudson (Dagsboro) sister Destiney Mumford (Laurel), brother Kyree Mumford (Salisbury), niece Eden Dixon (Laurel). Uncles Larry Horsey (Laurel), Shawn Horsey (Dover), Bryndon Mumford (Millsboro), Aunts Chrislyn Mumford (Millsboro), Cramelle Mumford (Millsboro), Channelle Mumford (Millsboro) a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Corey will be greatly missed by his family, friends and community.
