Catherine H. Carey

Mrs. Catherine Huell Carey was the fourth of seven children, born to the late Freddie Huell and the late Lillie Grannison Huell on May 31, 1942, in the Blakely community of Salters, South Carolina. She departed this life on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, caused by the effects of Alzheimer's disease. She was 71. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Freddie L. Huell and a nephew reared as a brother, Mr. Jackie L. Huell. Catherine accepted Christ at an early age and joined Jerusalem A.M.E Church in Salters, South Carolina where she sang on the junior choir. Throughout Catherine’s Christian experience she was a member of several other churches including M.F. Chase Unity Memorial Church, Greater Life Christian Church, Second Baptist Church, and Free Spirit Baptist Church. She was a fun-loving person in her youth. Her favorite things to do were dancing, playing basketball, sewing, knitting, crocheting, cleaning, cooking, and singing. She also loved children, and if she had her way, she would name every newborn in the community. Catherine attended Blakely High School and was one of the stars on the basketball team. She was a member of the graduation class of 1961. She relocated to Ellendale, Delaware in November of 1961. She met the love of her life in 1963, Mr. Jerome Edward Carey, who she lovingly referred to as “Jerry.” They were united in holy matrimony on October 19, 1963. This union was blessed with one daughter, Ms. Katrina L. Carey and one grandson Terrell Carey-Jackson. Catherine was a retired federal government employee for the United States Department of Agriculture, providing them with 30 plus years of dedicated service. Catherine spent her free time with friends and family, and vacationing with her husband in the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Spain. Loved ones left to cherish her precious memories are, her husband, Rev. Jerome E. Carey of Camden Delaware, Ms. Katrina L. Carey of Washington DC, one grandson Terrell Carey-Jackson of Macon Georgia, two sisters, Ethel Huell, and Mrs. Aleane Huell Lockhart (husband, Tommy Lockhart) of Salters, South Carolina. Catherine’s three brothers, Dan Huell, Mr. Harry Huell,(wife, Linda Huell), Mr. Clarence Huell and (wife, Penny Huell), of Salters, SC. Sister In-Law, Ms. Barbara Huell of Salters, South Carolina. One Aunt, Ms. Lizzie Grannison Joiner, of Clearwater, FL. Brothers-in-law, Richard Brewington and (wife, Nan Brewington), Maurice Carey, Ronald Carey, Steven Carey, Kevin Carey, and one sister In-law Marsha Carey, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends.
