Carl V. Metz

Carl Virtus White Metz, was born June 10, 1929 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to the late Robert White and Gertrude White. Gertrude White then married Algurnon Metz, who adopted Carl and provided nurturing until Al’s passing. Carl is the youngest of three siblings; Earl White, Stanford White and Everett White, who have all gone home to be with the Lord. At the age of 87, Carl went home to be with the Lord on July 25, 2016. As he took his last breath he was supported in grace by his daughter Troy Farmer and son-in-law David Farmer at Season’s Hospice located at Christiana hospital in Newark, Delaware. Carl learned early the concept of supporting his family through experiences of hardship, survival, and hard work. At the age of 13, he went to work in the steel mills of Pennsylvania. After which, he became employed by the New York Rail System as a porter and cook. After Carl’s service with the New York Rail System, he became employed with United Parcel Services (UPS) as the first minority driver in his territory. Carl then transitioned to work for Pan American Airlines as a Sky Cap for Customer Baggage and Handling at J. F. K. Airport in New York. While working under the tutelage of his manager and mentor, Carl excelled in his duties and position. Carl acted on his desires of entrepreneurship and owned a night club, convenience store and a take out restaurant, in addition to selling a multitude of products and services. As an avid businessman, Carl continued his tenure in the airlines transferring from Pan American to Trans World Airlines (TWA), where he acquired the Baggage and Handling contract. Carl commuted for over 30 years, commuting back and forth to New York and his residence in lower Delaware to maintain his employment and ties to support for other aspiring visionaries. Carl enjoyed gatherings with family and friends, always sharing words of encouragement and wisdom. He was a lover of great food, fun and fellowship making others feel like no one is a stranger. Carl loved to tell stories and embellish with color and creativity. He also had a passion for going to the beach and the casinos; additionally, he enjoyed playing cards, watching old movies, dancing and family road trips. Carl had a heart for the Word of God and loved going to his church at Faith City in Newark, Delaware. Carl has touched the lives of so many by being a doer and not just a sayer. His motto was “Don’t wait and see, go and do!” Carl wasn’t one to wait and to ask, “Let me know if I can help you?” He was one to show you how he could by giving from his heart! Carl was fondly known as “Rev” because he not only gave a good word, but gave a hand up to those who had a need and fell on hard times. He believed relentlessly in people even those that society had often tossed aside. Carl provided many jobs to society’s deprived and discounted, who desired to have a second chance by putting them into rehabilitation, providing housing and sharing the necessities essential to livelihood. Carl shared a marital union for forty years with the love of his life, Eva “Peggy Coursey” Metz who preceded him in death May 15, 2004 in addition to his son, Jeffrey Coursey who passed in 2001. He leaves to celebrate his life a son Mills Robert “Bobby” Coursey, daughter Troy C. Farmer and son-in-law, David W. Farmer; his grandchildren, David W. Farmer, Jr., Tyelor Farmer, Daniel Farmer, Keisha Woodford, Alicia Abernathy, Robert Coursey, III, Tiaja Langston, Christian Coursey, Lauren Coursey; loving great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends to celebrate his live.
