Alonzo Bernard "Duke" Smith

On Monday, October 29, 2018, Alonzo Bernard Smith departed this life at the age of 82, at Corsica Hills Nursing Home. He was born on June 2, 1936, in Worton, Maryland, to the late Wilson Bernard Smith and Bernice Boyer S. Lomax. Alonzo attended Sunday School at an early age. Alonzo was educated in the Kent County Public Schools. After attending Working Point and Coleman School, he went on to Chestertown until the age of 16, when he went to work to help his mother send his sister and brother through school. He worked on farms and as time went on he worked various other jobs, including working with Allen Tyler & Son and J. W. Walker to help build schools in both Maryland and Delaware. He also cut grass for the late Morris Davis, New Christian Chapel of Love, and the Williams Family, all in Worton, Maryland, Frank Newsome of Butlertown, MD, and Steve Cade and the late Ann Berry, both of Kennedyville, Maryland. Additionally, he worked for Mt. Olive Church in Butlertown, Maryland and I. U. Church in Worton, Maryland under Judge Nun. In addition to his parents, Alonzo was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Shorter and Catherine Murray and one brother, William “Pete” Smith. Alonzo leaves to mourn, his wife of 54 years, Frances Smith; two sons, Kevin B. Smith and Dwayne Smith of Big Woods, MD; two daughters, Dianna Smith of Church Hill, MD and Rosalind Smith of Big Woods, MD; three sisters, Shirley Warren of Chestertown, MD, Hannah Henry of Big Woods, MD, and Vanessa Lomax of Big Woods, MD; one brother, Charles Smith of Harrisburg, PA; three sisters-in-law Armita Hynson of Baltimore, MD, and Betty Smith and Hazel Wilson, both of Chestertown, MD; one brother-in-law, John Shorter; seven grand-children, Shanisha Smith of Houston, TX, Latoya Smith of Church Hill, MD, Nashira Short and her husband Joe of Salisbury, MD, Tashira Kennedy of Church Hill, MD, Minister Dominic Harris and wife Michelle of Aberdeen, MD, Ervin Hynson of Chestertown, MD and Damontae Smith of Dover, DE; nine great-grand children; and a host of nieces and nephews.
