Alice E. Smith

Alice E. Smith passed away into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at the Kindred Nursing Home in Virginia Beach. She was born on March 9, 1954 in Federalsburg, MD. To the parents of John Thomas and Louise Simmons Ricks. Alice received her formal education in the Caroline County school system. In 1985 she was united in Holy matrimony to Darryl Smith, Sr. of Laurel, DE. Alice previously lived in Delaware where she attended Milford and Miracle Revival Center under the leadership of Pastors Isaac and Laverne Ross. She was a faithful member who loved praising God every chance she got. After moving to Virginia Beach, VA, she became a member of More Than Conquerors Church under Pastor William Crest. There she obtained an Associate Degree in Theology from the More Than Conquerors Bible College. She was excited about her accomplishment and wanted to share the word of God with the world. For many years Alice worked as an CNA, doing private duty home care. She loved helping people and served them with a disarming smile. Alice was endowed and anointed with a special gift of writing poetry. She loved writing poems about family, her God, social issues and about life in general. Over the years she has written many poems which she had planned to have published in a collection. On many occasions she was asked to write and read her poems at community and church functions. Alice was a strong woman of faith and maintained a close walk with God by keeping Him real in her life. She loved life and was a fun-loving person. She believed in living life to the fullest and savoring every moment with gusto. She loved traveling and connecting with new people, places, and things. She also loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. Alice had a mean competitive spirit when it came to playing Bid Whist. She played to win and expected the same from her partner. When she ended up running a Boston and defeating her opponents, (her beautiful sisters) her boasting and infectious laughter could be heard around the world. Left to cherish her memory are her four children: Richard Ricks (Dover, DE), Shaunta Ricks (Dover, DE) Donshirl Ricks (Dover, DE), Darryl Ricks (Niki) Vienna, MD: grandchildren: Shaun Horsey, Chelsie Horsey, Terrance Ross II, Isaac Ross III, Zoquan Johnson, Danaja Ricks, great grand children: Rayshawn Sheppard, Jr., Mykeal Bowers, Moniyah Horsey, and Khalil Horsey. Sisters: Betty L. Ricks Jarman (Greenwood, DE), Shenley Ricks (Seaford, DE), Ella Ricks (Phila..PA), Joyce Hopkins (Milford, DE.), Angela Daniels (Anthony) Chesapeake, VA; Brothers: Freddie Deshields (Pat) Bridgeville, DE., Anthony Deshields (Angel) Federalsburg, MD. Dennis Deshields (Lisa) Accokeek, MD., David Ricks (Margo) Federalsburg, MD., Stanford Ricks (Vanessa) Seaford, DE. An Aunt- Grace Bailey of Waverly, VA. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Louise Ricks, brother, John Ricks, Jr., sister, Diane Horsey, and stepmothers, Martha President and Mamie Ricks.
