Martha Mae’s Life Story Martha Mae F. Jones entered into eternal rest peacefully at Chesapeake Cottage Assisted Living in Snow Hill, Maryland on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at 3:30pm following a brief illness. She was born on May 21, 1935 to the late Eleanor Gordy Fontaine and Sherman Fontaine in Cottage Grove (Westover), Maryland. She matriculated at Greenwood High School in Somerset County, Maryland. Martha Mae also graduated from Bowie State Teachers College in Bowie, Maryland with a degree in elementary education. On October 17, 1957, Martha Mae joined in holy matrimony to her college sweetheart, Raymond Jones, Jr. and from this union, three children were born. Her eldest son, Raymond Shargol Jones preceded her in death. She leaves behind a loving daughter, Angela M. Jones and a son, Raynard Jones. During her thirty-five (35) years teaching career, she loved her first grade students and taught several generations in the Somerset County school system. She was formerly employed at Frankford Elementary School in Frankford, Delaware and at Marion Elementary School in Marion Station near Crisfield, Maryland. She also taught at Westover Elementary School in Westover, Maryland and finished her stellar teaching career at Princess Anne Elementary School in Princess Anne, Maryland During her earlier years, Martha Mae was an active member of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Pocomoke City, Maryland. A devoted seamstress, she loved to sew and stitch clothes for close friends and family members during the summer months. She also loved to cook and would deliver homemade dinners and baked goods to the sick and shut-in local church members while teaching. Her favorite baked goods were homemade sweet potato biscuits and cinnamon rolls which everyone loved during the holidays. Her favorite past time also was going shopping with her daughter at the shopping malls. Later in life, Martha Mae moved to Salisbury, Maryland to be closer to the local shopping malls and family restaurants because she loved eating out during her golden years. In addition to her parents, husband and eldest son, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Gilbert Fontaine, John Fontaine and William Fontaine and three sisters, Mary F. Cornish, Rosie Fontaine and Jeanette F. Thompson. Loving memories of Martha Mae Jones’ life will be cherished by: her son, Raynard Jones and daughter, Angela M. Jones; her foster brother, Thomas Stevenson and adopted brother, Keith Fontaine; nieces, Charlene Jackson, Carol Harmon, Beverly Cornish, Joan Cornish, Jacqueline Cornish, Shirley Snead, Dorothy Wise, Eleanor Hayward, Esther Fontaine, Willis Fontaine and Mary Ballard, nephews, William Fontaine and Muhammad Abdulsalaam and many more cousins and relatives, too numerous to mention.
