Marion Joseph Johnson Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Marion Joseph Johnson, affectionally known as Pop, Pluck or Flash and well known by many as Pop-Pop 79 of Laurel, Delaware departed this life on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at Tidal Health Peninsula Regional in Salisbury, Maryland. Born in Delmar, Delaware to the late Alexander Gaines and Edna Johnson Hopkins on November 24, 1941 (according to the government), however his parents said that he was born in 1940. He attended Owens Corner School in Columbia, Delaware, Paul Laurence Dunbar Elementary in Laurel, Delaware and graduated from William C. Jason High School in Georgetown, Delaware. On June 30, 1961, he married his high school sweetheart the late Rebecca Ann Kenney-Truitt and they were married for more than 49 years before her death in August 2010. Most of his life he resided in Columbia, Delaware and as his health began to fail for the past five years he lived with his caregiver and loving daughter Vanessa Moore in Laurel, Delaware. Most of his life he worked as either a welder and a truck driver, a passion that he passed on to his grandson DeShay Kenney. He was also an active member of Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church where he served as a Trustee, and a member of the United Methodist Men and the Men’s Choir. He had a way with all children and it seems that he was Pop-Pop not only his grandchildren and great grands, but all children in the church and community. Even after moving to Laurel, he gained a new name, Neighbor and freely shared his candy and gum with the neighborhood kids. Most days you could find him sitting on the deck with his legs crossed, swinging in his swing, feeding and watching the birds or tending his treasured garden and hanging flower baskets. He loved to be outside. He also especially loved his daily and weekly phone calls with his grandchildren and great grands. He could tell you what state DeShay was traveling in or what time Immon had to be at work daily. He also looked forward to his weekly face-time calls with his great granddaughter Lavendar in Memphis, TN. He truly loved being the patriarch of his family. He leaves to cherish his memory, two sons Rev. Emanuel L. Johnson, Crisfield, Maryland and Timothy (Michelle) Johnson, Laurel, Delaware, four daughters, Vanessa Moore, Laurel, Delaware, Fannie (Kenneth) Armstrong, Salisbury, Maryland, Marian Joanne Neal, Dover, Delaware, and Vandola (Marvin) Robbins, Fayetteville, North Carolina. 11 grandchildren, DeShay (An), Yolanda (Keytwan), Faith, Immon (Docia), Marchell, Markea, Marlena, Alysa, Erika, Dana, and Mariah. 14 great-grandchildren and 1 Great- great granddaughter. One brother, Lester George, of Maryland. One sister-in-law, Ida Lee Smith and one brother-in-law, Robert Brown, Sr. He is also survived by several devoted nieces and nephews, his Mt. Nebo Church Family, his neighbor, and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, preceded in death by his loving wife Rebecca, his siblings, Arlene, Lona, Norris, Eugene, Millie, Florence, Erma and Norman. Two son-in-laws, Marcus Moore and David Neal and one daughter-in-law, June Johnson and one granddaughter-in-law, LaTisha Kenney.
