Marie Brummell

Marie Sydonia Brummell passed away peacefully in the arms of her youngest son James Brummell, Jr. on Sunday, December 23, 2018 at 1:10am Sunday morning (how fitting on the raising Sabbath)…in hospice comfort care, from the staff and nurses and doctors at Bayleigh Chase Assisted Living & Hospice in Easton, Maryland. She had lived a wonderful life and was blessed to see 85 God Glorious Years! Book of Psalms Psalm 23 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 23:2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 23:3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 23:5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. Marie, Nana Lee, Mom Lee, Ma, Mom Dukes, “The Dukes” was born in the quiet, close knit community of East New Market in North Dorchester County on the 11th of June in 1933… to the Enterprising Leroy W. Cephas & his Soulmate Daisy Y. Cephas. Marie received her education in Dorchester County, Maryland and attended Fredrick Douglass St. Clair High School in Cambridge, Maryland. Not long after her educational tenure in Dorchester County Schools, Marie entered the work force and immediately after that, she met and fell in love with James Leon Brummell, Sr. of Federalsburg via Cambridge. She started her continuous workforce career, that spanned from the 50’s to the late 70’s to the early 80’s. Her first job was at Bogash’s Sewing Factory in Cambridge, Maryland. After mastering all she could there, she moved on to her illustrious career at Western Publishing in the Bindery Department. After a “Golden Career” at Western, she finished her remaining working years at North American Phillips Electronics (Airpax) where she made it through some harrowing times (Unionizing and layoffs abound) and retired with full benefits due to her tenacious spirit! Marie Sydonia Brummell— Daughter… Sister… Wife… Mother. She should be remembered as the best in all those stages in her life. She did her utmost best in all those stages in her life! Mom Dukes was a survivor, like none other. When she lost a third of her immediate family in a horrible fire, she continued being that wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend! She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Lucille Askins and Dorothy Purnell, five brothers, Nathaniel, Leroy, Ralph, Roland and Lewis Cephas and her very loving parents. Marie Brummell is survived by: her sons, Derrick D. Cephas (Donna) of New York City, New York, Hamilton D. Cephas of Cambridge, Maryland and James Leon Brummell, Jr. (Ashley) of Crisfield Maryland; grandchildren, Rachele Daisy Ann Cephas “Daisy” of New York City, New York, Alexandra, Natania Helen Cephas “Sashie” of New York City, New York, , Tamaj, Xavier Martin “Tee Grizzley” of Crisfield, Maryland, Diamond Shakira Martin “DunDunk” of Terre Haute, Indiana, Nevaeh Marie Porter “Stinky Butt” of Terre Haute, Indiana, Javanna Ramira Ellington “Boopie” of Crisfield, Maryland, Javian Ramon Ellington “SlenderMan” “Fatty” of Crisfield, Maryland, Maurice Lawayne Ellington “Reecee Cup”, “Cup”, “Dimples” and “Lil’Man” of Crisfield, Maryland, She is survived by her remaining sisters, a tight knit clan, The Matriarch Mary-Ida Cephas/McCray of Cambridge, Maryland, Daisy Cephas/Adams of Pikesville, Maryland and Charlotte-Ann Cephas/Cornish (Richard) of Hampton, Virginia and a loving sister-in-law Margaret Ann Brummell-Stanley of Linkwood, Maryland.
