March 26, 1935 - October 24, 2021
Johnnie Harris, Jr., affectionately known as “Hoggie”, was born March 26, 1935 (celebrated March 25, 1935) in Sumter County, South Carolina. He departed this life on Sunday, October 24, 2021, at his residence in Pondtown, Maryland. He was the son of Corine and Johnnie Harris, Sr. The Harris family later moved to Columbia, South Carolina, where Johnnie was educated in the Richland County School System. He attended Booker T. Washington High School, “The Golden Tornados”; then enlisted in the United States Air Force. After leaving the U.S. Air Force, he worked several jobs and later began driving Cement Mixer Trucks with Gillespie & Son, Inc. in Chestertown, Maryland. After 46 ½ years of employment with Gillespie & Son, Inc., working with three generations of the Gillespies, Johnnie retired in 2008. The Gillespie Family often recognized Johnnie and attributed their company’s success to his years of dedicated labor and skills. Johnnie was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. He loved spending time with his family and traveling “Down South” to South Carolina. He believed in keeping cars well maintained and detailed with sparkling rims and tires. His love for clean, shiny cars was passed on to his son, Vincent. Everyone knew “Don’t Sit on Johnnie’s car!” Johnnie, who adored his family and friends, was a humble, unique, and loving man with an affectionate laugh. In addition to his parents, Johnnie was preceded in death by his son, Vincent E. Harris; brothers, George Hickman, James Hickman and William Harris, Sr.; only sister Pearl ‘Cenia’ Isaac; sisters-in-law, Bernice Hickman and Odenner Harris; brothers-in-law, Samuel Isaac, Marvin Lewis and Elder Darnell Henry; and mother and father-in-law, Mr. Harvey and Mrs. Edna M.
