Donald Lee Hitchens Sr. Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Donald Lee Hitchens, Sr. age 88, transitioned to Glory on Friday, March 25, 2022, at Tidal Health Hospital in Seaford, Delaware, after a brief illness. He was born on December 6, 1933, in Laurel, Delaware to the late Reverend Richard and Alberta Hitchens. He received his early education at Paul Laurence Dunbar School in Laurel. He enlisted in the United States Army where he served one tour. After that, he served in the Army Reserve. October 1964, he was employed with the DuPont Plant in Seaford. He retired in May 1999 after 35 years of service. On January 2, 1954, he was joined in holy matrimony to Lorraine Cooper. To this union were born six children: Donald, Jr. “Donnie,” Ronald, “Ronnie,” Tyrone, Michael, Rochelle, and Kenneth. He was a good provider for his family. He was a lifetime member of St. Matthews First Baptist Church in Laurel where he served in numerous capacities over the years. He was a proud member of the Usher Board, chairman of the Deacon Board, Pastor’s Aide, and Missionary Ministry. He was also a member of the Delmarva Usher’s Board Association, and the Laurel Community Foundation – The Hope House. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family, his cellphone, and Facebook. He enjoyed watching game shows, basketball, and football on television. His favorite team was the Philadelphia Eagles. He loved cooking macaroni and cheese and trying to make sweet potato pie. Donald leaves to cherish his memory, wife of 68 years, Lorraine Hitchens; sons- Donald Hitchens, Jr, Michael Hitchens (Elaine), Kenneth Hitchens (Migdelia), Alan Carr, Donald Thompson; daughters – Rochelle Camper (Kendall), Ashlee Poe, and Shirnelle Blango; 10 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; one brother – Charles Wayne Hitchens; sisters-in-law – Claudette Hitchens and Gwendolyn Twine; two daughters-in-law – Connie Hitchens and Vanessa Hitchens; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons – Tyrone and Ronald Hitchens; one sister – Sylvia (Joe) Oney; four brothers – Theodore (Ardella) Hitchens, William Alvin Hitchens, Louis (Margo) Hitchens, and Robert (Bertha) Hitchens; sisters-in-law Carmetta (Donald) Holden, Hattie (Eugene) Puckham, and Helen Hitchens; brothers-in-law, Richard Cooper, Jr., and Chester Twine; daughters-in-law – Vera “Polly” Hitchens and Vanessa “Sue” Hitchens.
