Bernice’s Life and Legacy When peace like a river attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul. Mrs. Bernice Bivens Finney, a longtime resident (95) of Stockton, Maryland, departed this life at the age of ninety-five (95) on Saturday, April 16, 2022 at Peake Health Care at Hartley in Pocomoke City, Maryland. Bernice was the second of eight children born to the late John and Georgia Mae Hatton Bivens in Painter, Virginia on November 3, 1926. Bernice married the late James H.H. Finney on September 30, 1950, and out of that union were 6 children. She was a domestic worker for several families in Stockton and surrounding areas. A faithful Christian who truly loved the Lord, Bernice was a member of Mount Hope Baptist Church in Stockton, Maryland. She was the oldest mother of the church and served on the Senior Choir, Usher Board, Assistant Church Clerk, Treasurer of the Missionaries Circle, Kitchen Committee and Communion Steward. Bernice was devoted worker of the Lord. She enjoyed being in the Lord’s service and didn't like to miss any services. Bernice leaves her children to carry on her legacy: five daughters, Lillian Mills of Salisbury, Maryland, Evelyn Finney of Delmar, Maryland, Deborah Finney (Larry) of Bloxom, Virginia, Valerie Finney (Darryl) of Baltimore, Maryland and Paulette Tabron (Reginald) of Bowie, Maryland; 14 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren; two sisterly devoted friends, Gertrude Cannon and Esther Dickerson; one special cousin, Janice Conquest and several nieces and nephews. Bernice was preceded in death by: her husband, James Henry Hezekiah Finney; three sons, Kevin Finney, James Finney, Jr. and William H. Bivens; four brothers, Pratt, Moses and John Bivens and Eugene Jackson; three sisters, Elaine May Dare, Evelyn Taylor and Leonra Cooper and two grandchildren, Marsheila Johnson and Gregory Hudson.
