Anita Mary Alston

Anita Mary Alston, loving wife of 61 years and mother of three, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on April 14, 2019, in Dover, Delaware. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on February 5, 1935. Anita was the only child of the late Hentson Gene Marshall and the late Mae Rita Hurtt. Her favorite childhood pastime was cooking and baking with her grandmother, the late Mabel Little. In 1955, Anita graduated from Dunbar High School in Baltimore, Maryland, where she was a member of the Girls Choir, Cheering Squad, and Tumbling Team. On March 7, 1958, Anita married Air Force Sergeant Kenneth Earl Alston, who is also from Baltimore, Maryland. Together, they have raised two sons and one daughter. Throughout her husband’s military career, Anita has lived and traveled to numerous countries around the globe. Her favorite country was Greece, where she enjoyed the people and cuisine. Anita liked cooking and baking. Everything was made from scratch. She never used anything from a can unless she canned it herself. Anita enjoyed indoor gardening. She would often ‘rescue’ dying plants from the store or from their owners. Anita would tend to over 200 houseplants with African Violets being her favorite to grow. In addition to indoor gardening, she enjoyed needlepointing. Much of her needlepoint work was so intricate that people would mistake it for a print or a painting. Anita also liked to crochet and make clothes for family and friends. She became a Jehovah’s Witness and was baptized on May 21,1983. Anita was a devoted Pioneer for the Felton Congregation of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, where she had witnessed to thousands of people and helped those learn about the Bible and God’s Kingdom. Anita is survived by her husband of 61 years, Kenneth Earl Alston; her children, Kenneth & Bella Alston, Jr., Karl & Vickie Alston, Valerie & Wayde Cherry; her grandchildren, Joyale & Darryn Richardson, Kenneth & Peaches Alston, III, Jarrod Alston and Lisa Alston; her great-grandchildren, Cencere Richardson, Legacy Richardson and King Richardson. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Melanie Posey, Rodney Alston, Russel & Nancy Posey; as well as a long-time family and friends, Ralph Howell, Charles Caplinger, Jr., Stacey & Bert Boucher and family, and other loving friends.
