The Life

Miriam Catherine Cotton was born on November 22, 1953, in East Harlem, New York. She was the oldest of six children born to Francisco and Maria Resto.

Growing up in Spanish Harlem, Miriam attended St. Cecilia’s Elementary School and graduated from Mable Dean Bacon High School. She also completed a two year degree in Computer Science. Miriam worked at the Wards Island Psychiatric Hospital and retired after 20 years of service. In her spare time, she enjoyed watching her favorite baseball team, the Yankees, cooking, traveling and listening to salsa and jazz music.

Miriam was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Carmen and Eric.

Miriam is survived by her husband Gordon; daughter, Sheenita; siblings, Raquel, Joanne and Francisco, Jr.; nieces and nephews, Marlyke, Maylean, Ashley, Eric Jr., Jada and Jasmine; great nieces, Anaiah and Tianah and great nephews Marlyke Josiah and Jiovanny or “El Italiano” as she would call him.

Special Memories

Raquel: Miriam was my oldest sister. She and I enjoyed spending countless weekends together and watching her favorite old movies. I enjoyed our bike rides together from Yonkers to Central Park and will always hold those memories close.

Joanne: Miriam was my oldest sister. She and I shared the same birthday, five years apart. I enjoyed her conversations and sharing stories of our childhood, teasing her and always joking around.

Sheenita: I enjoyed our daily conversations over the phone. I also enjoyed spending time with her and going to restaurants to eat. We would have so much fun and would always joke and laugh together. My favorite memory is when we went to Pennsylvania and dressed up as two saloon girls. I will miss listening to her stories and will cherish all the moments we shared together.

With loving memories from,
