Obituary

Mary Emily Clayton, daughter of the late Herman and Earnestine Clayton, was born on April 10, 1944, in Colemans, Maryland. Mary departed this life on May 9, 2020, after residing at The Lisner Louise Dickerson Hurt Home in Washington, D.C., for a period nine months.

Mary began her education in the public elementary school system in Colemans, Maryland. She was a graduate of Henry Highland Garnett High School, Chestertown, Maryland. Mary graduated from Cortez Peters Business College, in Washington, D.C. in 1964. Mary also attended The Armstrong Educational Center in Washington, D.C. Mary was employed at the Department of Labor. She received numerous awards, special acts and letters of recognition including, Special Office Group Awards, Secretary’s Distinguished Career Award for high quality and efficiency and Support Staff Award. She also received “The Good and Faithful Award” from Gethsemane Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend Khalfani Drummer.

Mary was a dedicated member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, Washington, D.C., serving faithfully as a member of the Mission Ministry, Usher Ministry, Flower Club, Women’s Ministry, Greeter’s Ministry, the Gethsemane Sentinel and Tribal Assistant for Zebulon Tribe, Pastor Bible Study, Sunday School Adult Class No. 1 and the Culinary Ministry. Mary willing did publicity for the church and many other organizations. Mary never forgot her home church. She always attended Union United Methodist Church in Colemans before going back to D.C. Mary was a people person who would go that “extra mile” to help someone in need. She took time to visit the sick and shut in. Mary enjoyed talking on the telephone so she would call members of the church and others to see how they were doing. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 118:24, This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Her Favorite hymns were, One Day at a Time, This Little Light of Mine, Coming Up the Rough Side of the Mountain and Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand.

Mary was fondly called “MC” by many. Her life revolved around her family. In her leisure time, Mary enjoyed traveling and watching soap operas. Her favorite football team was the Dallas Cowboys.

Her wisdom, courage and faith is strength today for those who celebrate her Services of Triumph. She is survived by one loving brother, Godfrey Clayton, Churchville, Maryland; a loving sister, Jacqueline Jones, Marydel, Maryland; one brother-in-law, Charles Jones, Jr., Marydel, Maryland; one sister-in-law, Evelynn Clayton, Churchville, Maryland; nieces, nephew and a host of relatives and friends.

Mary will be deeply be missed by all who knew and loved her.
