Obituary

Mable (Stephens) Credle, a loving and devoted mother, sister and friend, peacefully departed this life at the age of 79, in the comfort of her home in Dover, Delaware, on July 13, 2020.

Mable was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, to the late David and Sylvia Stephens, God fearing parents, who reared their children with strong Christian principles. Affectionately known to her family and friends as Mae, she was next to the youngest of 10 siblings. Raised in Java, Virginia, on the family farm, Mae was soft spoken, generous and a compassionate Christian. Upon graduating from high school with academic excellence, Mae earned a bachelor’s degree from Virginia State College and later in life earned a Master of Social Work degree from Kean College in Union, New Jersey.

After moving to New Jersey, she met and married Guy L. Credle, in 1961. She gave birth to two daughters, Angela and Dorene. In the preceding years, Mae joined Pilgrim Baptist Church in Red Bank, New Jersey, became a loyal member and diligently served in several auxiliaries, women’s ministries and sang in two church choirs.

Not only was Mae a loving, selfless mother, but, she was hardworking and intelligent with a driven thirst for knowledge as well as an impeccable work ethic. She worked with the state of New Jersey Department of Human Services as a licensed Social Worker in the Division of Developmental Disabilities, where she passionately ensured resources were available for citizens with mental and physical disabilities, for over 23 years, until she retired in 2003.

Upon retirement, Mae moved to Dover, Delaware, where she reunited with her sisters and became a member of Mount Enon Baptist Church in Milford, Delaware. Mae’s life flourished in Dover, making memories with her incessant love and laughter during time well spent with her children, sharing wisdom and the best parts of herself with her grandchildren, whom she doted on and loved with all her heart. She genuinely enjoyed baking and providing all the delicious desserts for family gatherings. She was truly a phenomenal woman, whose nature encompassed kindness and God given strength. Her life was an example of one of the Bible verses she loved, Ephesians 4:32— “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”

Mae leaves to cherish her memory with love, two daughters, Angela Felicia Baker (Jeffrey) of Sierra Vista AZ and Dorene L. Credle of Dover, DE; sister, Louise Overton of Milford, DE; brother, Luke “Bunny” Stephens (Mary) of Newport News, VA; sisters-in-law, Margaret and Virginia; three grandchildren, Analice C. Baker, Ashlee F. Baker and Jeffrey S.G. Baker of Sierra Vista, AZ; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
