Obituary

Francis Arnold Monroe Freeman, Sr., was born October 31, 1930, in Dover, Delaware. He was the third of fifteen children that blessed the union of Reverend Thomas Elwood Freeman and Mother Della Lewis Freeman.

Bishop was always a hard worker with jobs in Dover area farms, Buchanan’s Tire Center and cleaning offices. He spent most of his career at the City of Dover, where he worked for twenty-five years, as the team leader in Storage Management. He worked just as hard for the Kingdom of God, helping his father build churches, including the Union Baptist Church of Dover. Later, he helped his father build and start First Pilgrim Baptist Church of Camden, Delaware. Here, he served as a deacon, custodian, groundskeeper and bus driver. In 1994, Francis was ordained and installed as pastor of First Pilgrim Baptist Church, Willow Grove, Delaware, where he served until his death. Bishop F. A. Monroe Freeman, Sr., as he was known, loved the Lord, his family and his church. He loved talking about the Lord wherever he went. He was blessed to have touched so many lives by his wisdom, kindness and generosity. He was very charitable and would help out when someone had a need, especially his grandchildren. Bishop also enjoyed collecting books, reading, telling old stories and buying electronic gadgets.

Francis was preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers, one sister and two daughters.

Bishop leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Mother Reatha Freeman of Dover, DE; four children, F. A. Monroe Freeman, Jr. of Dover, DE, Dorreatha Cornish of Lincoln, DE, David A. Shockley, Jr. (Ursula) of Dover, DE and Sidney N. Freeman of Dover, DE; four siblings, Thomas Freeman of Providence, RI, Anthony Freeman (Stephany) of Dover, DE, Bishop Doreina Miles of Dover, DE and Della Scott of Washington, DC; a
life-long friend, Bishop Ralph Benson, Sr. of Harrington, DE and a host of godchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins, whom he loved..
