Willie "Popsicle" White

Willie “Popsicle” White of Dover, DE departed this life at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, DE on July 13, 2017. He was the son of the late Sonny Boy Frances White and Esbella Spike. Willie was born May 10, 1945 in Tennille, GA. He was 72. Willie was known to everyone as “Popsicle” very few knew his real name. He attended T.J. Elder High School in Tennille, GA. Popsicle worked for the City of Dover for many years. He later journeyed on to be one of the best landscapers in Delaware. Popsicle was many folks’ handy, yard and errand man. He was well known at every barbershop from Dover to Smyrna. He was a kind, loveable person with a heart of gold. Popsicle was “OCD” - he was always clean and tidy. His apartment was immaculate at all times and was often used as a model apartment for Luther Towers. He would visit his friends that were in nursing homes, take folks trash cans out on their trash pick-up day and he would visit the sick and shut in. He was a “Social Butterfly.” Everybody loved Popsicle. He never had a driver’s license but he rode his bicycles like they were cars. When he could no longer ride his bicycles he didn’t allow that to deter him from getting to his destinations. He was “a walking man.” It was not uncommon for him to walk from Dover to Smyrna. If you wanted to catch Popsicle at home, you had better arrive at his home before the sun rose. He was a member of Grace United Baptist Church, Smyrna, Delaware, under the leadership of Pastor Samuel Waller. Popsicle was well known throughout the community. Popsicle was a friend to many and would help anyone he could. Popsicle was preceded in death by his parents, Sonny Boy Frances White and Esbella Spike; brother Herbert Lee White; sister-in-law, Evelyn White; foster sister, Nellie Cannon; and his other siblings. He leaves to cherish fond memories, his loving companion Clarissa Custis; his son, Willie White Jr., six grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; adopted nieces, Angela C. Wilson Bowers (Carlton) and Elizabeth Daniels; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and co-workers.
