William A. Deshields

On December 4th of the year 2014, the Almighty Lord in his infinite wisdom, gently reached down and closed the eyes of our beloved William Alfred DeShields (93 years of age) affectionately known as Buster. The sun rose, on William Alfred DeShields on February 9, 1921, in Salisbury, Maryland the pride and joy of William Thomas DeShields and Viola Winder. Buster was one of 13 children, all whom have preceded him in death. Buster received his education in the public school system of Star Hill in Camden, Delaware. In 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served with the 3430th Quartermaster Truck Company in Italy during World War II. Upon his honorable discharged he was awarded the W.W. II Victory Ribbon. Buster worked at Remington Rand later to become known as Unisys Corporation. There he served as a machinist and foreman. Retiring in 1987, he began focusing more on the moving company that he owned and operated. He loved America’s pastime and was a sucker for good game, regardless of how many ending the game would go, he would sit and watch. Buster was also allow to concentrate more on one of his life’s love- gardening. He belonged to the Norristown Gardening Club and received several first place awards that landed him in the local newspaper. Whatever he grew in his garden he shared with whomever, from his to children and other family members, to neighbors, as well others in and outside his community. He took much pride in the stock he grew. Described by others, Buster was a kind and generous man. Buster also loved his family deeply. It was one of the most important aspects of his life. He took care of his mother, as well as his siblings older and younger. Buster was truly the glue that held this family together. Even in his later years, he would travel back and forth from Pennsylvania to Delaware to care for family members in need. Buster is survived by his wife June DeShields of 28 years. As well as his 7 children, one to Lillian Russum, son Charles Russum and his wife Dorthy of Marydel, DE., and six to Pearl Smith, son Alfred DeShields of Philadelphia, PA., daughter Pearl DeShields of Philadelphia, PA., daughter Gearld Jackson of Dover,DE., son Earl DeShields and his wife Patricia of Philadelphia, PA., daughter Gloria DeShields of Glenolden, PA., and daughter Marlenea Samlu and husband Pauli of Waipahn, HI., as well as a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
