Virginia M. Pettyjohn

Virginia Marie “Hurst” Pettyjohn, the oldest child of the late Othar and Della Hurst, was born in Georgetown, Delaware on October 13, 1928. Virginia a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend departed this life on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at Delaware Hospice in Milford, DE. Virginia received her early education at the Georgetown Public School, completing the eighth grade. On January 1, 1975, Virginia married the love of her life, John H. Pettyjohn and to this blessed union was born one son, John Carlos Tingle. Through her life’s journey, she was employed at many places including 196C Milton Colored School, the Sports Craft in Lewes, Delaware, Doxie Clam Factory and retired from Swifts Poultry. Virginia was a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church singing with the “The Voices of Hope” and the Senior Choir. She was known as one of the “Golden Girls.” Her favorite song was “Where He May lead Me I Will Go.” She was a member of the Milford Cheer Center, learning to do oil painting which she loved. She loved going to the Cheer Center with her brothers and sisters and lets not forget bingo. Virginia also loved her family. She loved family picnics, eating sweet corn, playing spades, cooking holiday dinners and spending time out and about. She was a very stylish dresser. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, John H. Pettyjohn; her sister, Helen C. Harris and her daughter, Thelma Anderson. Virginia is survived by her faithful and caring son and caregiver, John Carlos Tingle and his wife, Dianne. She is also survived by her daughter, Gloria Tingle; her grandchildren, Michael Tingle and his wife, Nicole; Tashawn Tingle, Tyrron Tingle and Gina Anderson; several great-grandchildren; a special great-granddaughter, Cuartney Tingle; her sisters, Elizabeth A. Pettyjohn and her husband, Robert J. Pettyjohn of Harrington, DE, Agnes Bryant and Patricia Blanchett of Milford, DE and Ruth Wright and her husband, Russell of Milton, DE; two brothers, Othar Hurst and his wife, Mattie of Ellendale, DE and Clifford Hurst of Milton, DE; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Allen of Millsboro, DE and Florence Bailey of Philadelphia, PA; two brothers-in-law, Clarence Macklin and Robert Harris both of Ellendale, DE; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
