Virginia Miller

Virginia Mae Bundick Miller, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2018, at her home in Lincoln, Delaware, surrounded by her family. She was born on November 29, 1931, the 10th child of the late Hattie Mae Moore and Hezekiah Bundick, in Exmore, Virginia. Growing up in Nassau, Delaware, Virginia, along with her brothers and sisters, received her early education in a two-room schoolhouse in Belltown, Delaware. Her later education was obtained at Richard Allen School, located in Georgetown, Delaware. Virginia, affectionally called Shug, married and moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1954, where she remained for over 46 years. While there, she established a career with the Atlantic City Board of Education and retired after 30 years of dedicated service. She received various awards and certificates for exemplary performance during her career. Virginia began her spiritual journey at St. James A.M.E. Church and joined many organizations. Among them were treasure of the Senior and Gospel Choirs, Sunday School teacher, a member of the Missionary Society, Chairperson of the Kitchen Committee for the Annual Conference and a member of the Harmony Club. Virginia remained a very dedicated and loyal member and developed many friends and lots of stories to tell. She was so fond of her days at St. James, in Atlantic City, that every conversation you had with her would end up with some reference of her days there. She especially loved to talk about Atlantic City and how the elders in the church taught her the A.M.E. doctrine. After retirement, Virginia decided to move closer to family and in the year 2000, she moved back to Delaware, where she continued her spiritual growth and joined Bethel A.M.E. Church, Milton, Delaware. She was a member of the combined Gospel Choir and president of the Missionary Society. Virginia continued to attend Annual A.M.E. Conferences, where she enjoyed seeing her old friends from St. James A.M.E. Church, gathering more stories to be told. In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, James Miller and siblings, Dorothy, Catherine, George, Olivia, Charles, Elizabeth, Edith, Odelia, and Willis. Virginia Mae Miller leaves to cherish her memories, one sister, Annie Lee Trammell, of Belltown, DE; two daughters, Joyce Pitts (Eugene), of Bloomfield, NJ, and Beverly Pope, of Lincoln, DE; five grandchildren, William Baldwin (Erika), Darwin Pope, Tecia Shalazz (Musaheim), Edward Pope (Lamesha) and Travon Pope (Tonisha); 15 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; two nieces, Barbara Ellis and Della Miller, and a nephew, Robert Lee Bundick, whom were raised as sisters and brother; brother-in-law, retried Pastor, Reverend Braven O. Duffy; five godchildren, Charles Bush, Constance Kollock, Carol Williams, Herbie Brinson and Tara Brinson; and many more who will miss their “Aunt Shug”.
