Viola Virginia Jones

Obituary Viola Virginia Bivens Jones, 85, of Eden, Maryland went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 13, 2023, at her residence. “Viola”, “Mike”, “Vi”, or “Vokey”, as she was affectionately known by family and friends, was born on August 30, 1937 to the late Orlando “Lan” Bivens and the late Margaret Armwood Cannon Bivens. Viola was educated in the public school system of Somerset County, Maryland and attended classes at Wor-Wic Tech Community College. Viola attended St. Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church in Princess Anne, MD, until she joined New Psalmist Non-Denominational Church in Westover, MD. Viola served as an Usher, Missionary, and a member of the Women’s fellowship, and participated in other committees as she was able to do so. Viola loved talking to her special group of ladies from the hair salon and her special circle, watching her favorite television shows – Andy Griffith, Gomer Pyle, Meet The Browns, Perry Mason, Court TV, and listening to music and humming along to many tunes. Her favorite songs included “Jesus Keep Me Near The Cross by the Mississippi Mass Choir”, “The Other Shore by Luther Barnes and the Red Budd Gospel Choir”, “Jesus Promised Me A Home Over There” by Jennifer Hudson, and “I Came To Tell You What Jesus Said by the Trinity Inspirational Choir”. Viola began her career working at Ms. Neits Hair Salon, and after a few years, she began working at Campbell Soup Company, in Salisbury, MD, where she retired after 31 years of service. After retirement, Viola spent time working for S & S and S & J Cleaning Services, doing private duty sitting, and private tutoring to school age children. Viola leaves to cherish her memory, her children; Delores Spence of Eden, MD; Glenda Sinclair (Nathaniel) of Salisbury, MD; Cherry Doane, Margaret Jones, Marian Dennis (Leroy), Glendon Jones Jr., and Gertrude Hairston (Darryl) all of Princess Anne, MD; one daughter- in-law, Annette Jones, Eden, MD; one sister-in-law, Joan Cannon of Oaksville, MD; fourteen grandchildren, thirty-one great grandchildren, and eleven great-great grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Viola was preceded in death by her husband Archie Glendon Jones, one son, Richard Jones, Sr., and her father and mother. Viola was the youngest of twelve children and was preceded in death by her eleven siblings - Lucinda Cannon Horsey, Glenmore Cannon, Gertrude Cannon Warbington, Mary-Frances Cannon Doane, Leroy Cannon, Herman Cannon, Sr., Isabelle Cannon McGibboney, Letha Cannon Christopher, Glenmore Bivens, Orlando Bivens, Jr., and Betty Bivens Whittington.
