Viola H. Barnes

Viola H. Barnes “Sis” was born on May 22, 1931 in Bridgeville, Delaware to Virginia C. Edelin-White and Titus M. Henry. Viola attended Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School, Frederick Douglass High School in Seaford, Delaware. She graduated from Delaware State College and graduated from Berean Business College in Philadelphia, PA. Viola began employment at the Veterans Hospital, Elsmere, DE and later transferred to Dover Air Force Base and retired after 32 years of service. Viola was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia White; father, Titus Henry; husband, William C. (Billy) Barnes, Sr. of 21 years and her brother, Donald Henry. Sr. and step-father, Morris White. She leaves to cherish her memory one brother, William Edelin, Sr. of Wilmington, DE; six sisters, Joanne Maddox, Joyce Gibbs, Becky Gibbs, Lovella Wells, Frozine Wells, and Rhoda Williams. Viola (Sis) was blessed with four children. Gregory Henry, Sr. (Zandra) of Wilmington, DE, Jennifer Banks-Dexter (Bryan) of Rockton, IL, Bruce Banks of Bridgeville, DE and Larry Banks (Robyn) of Middletown, DE, along with Jackie Banks, Carlton Banks, Jr., Prentice Banks, Linda Banks and Henry (Pudden) Palmer (Deceased). Seven Grand-Children, Terrance (T-Byrd) Banks, Gregory (Little Greg) Henry, Jr., Brandon Henry, Amber (Am) Banks, Jabrea (Brea) Banks, Larry (Lj) Banks, Jr. and Raven (Rae-Rae) Dexter. Seven Great-Grand-children Jakeen (Keenie) Banks, Jaziah Banks, ViZaya Banks, Giavonni Henry, Kaydan Henry, Jayceon Monroe and Janiyah Bracey. Ten Step-Children Lucille Harmon, Vanessa Allen, Renee Kilgore, Joan Burton, April Barnes, Cherelle Beulah, Claudette Bulach, Eric Barnes, Billy Barnes, Anthony Barnes and Denzie Barnes (Deceased); a godson, Jerome "Bird" Houston, Jr.; and host of nieces, nephews, cousin and other family and friends. As a child, Viola attended Mount Calvary Methodist Church. At the age of the 13, she was the assistant pianist for the Ways of Trump Chorus under the direction of Mrs. Lydia Neal and for the choir at Mount Calvary Methodist Church under the direction of Mrs. Mary P. Cannon. Viola also organized a Young Adult Choir at Mount Calvary Methodist Church. On May 1959, the Lord Jesus Christ came into her heart and life and she was led to unite with Williams Chapel Church. Her favorite scripture was Psalms 34 and verse 22, which reads, “The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.” To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Viola H.
