Vernon Leroy Smith

Obituary Sgt. Vernon Leeroy Smith was born on October 11, 1956 to the late Melvin Smith, Sr. and late Mary Ellen Anderson Smith. After putting up a good battle, he departed this life at riverside Shore Memorial Hospital on July 4, 2018 (his mother’s birthday). He was the 4th of 5 Siblings. He was educated in Northampton County, Virginia . After his mother passed, he lived with cousin Inez Nock, who became his surrogate mother until he graduated from high school. After graduation. “Leeroy” as he was affectionately called by family and friends, immediately enlisted into the Army. The military became his passion. He served for 17 years. Because of health reasons he had t leave the life he loved. He made Colorado, Springs, Colorado his home there he met and married Sherry Smith. After leaving the military, Leeroy pursued other dreams, such as driving bus and becoming a entrepreneur, to name a few. He realized that his health was failing. So in 2014 he decided to move back home to be close to family and friends. He enjoyed the time he had left surrounded by his family, especially his “Big sister”, Regina, who was his rock, who took very good care of her little brother. And his cousin Pete who was his “ Road Dog”, riding around in his pride and joy, his Black Ford– F150. listening to Oldies but goodies. For the late 2 months of his life he was unable to care for himself, so he moved in with his sister and her family , who took care of him til the end. He leaves to cherish his memories one sister Regina Anderson-Chisum of Jamesville, Virginia; one brother Melvin smith, Jr. of Exmore, Virginia; two nieces, Leversa “Cookie” Anderson, Vernetta Anderson and sister of Regina, Bambara Jean Bailey; four nephews Larry Anderson, Rodney Anderson, Kelvin Paulson, Jr.(ShaKeisha) and Rev Ricardo Poulson, Sr. (Zotoria). a very special Cousin what was more like a brother Lionel “Pete” Anderson (Linda), other relatives and friends, In addition to his parents , he was preceded in death by a brother George "Nuke” Smith; a sister Jannie Anderson-Poulson.
