Vera M. Leatherberry-Nutter

Vera Martina Leatherberry-Nutter, affectionately known as “Dimples”, was born the ninth child to Lillian Brooks and Preston Leatherberry in Easton, MD on June 16, 1931. Vera attended Williamburg Elementary School and Easton High School. She grew up on a farm and worked along with her brothers and sisters; a lifestyle she said deeply enriched her life to this day. Dimples married Henry Edwin Nutter, Jr. in 1957 and moved to Seaford, DE. There, she and her husband raised two children, Ralph Alonzo Leatherberry and Darlene Williams. Dimples was a longtime member of Macedonia A.M.E. Church and remained until her demise. While serving at Macedonia, she served on several auxiliaries and attended church faithfully. She was a hard worker and truly dedicated to her family. She worked for E.I. DuPont in Seaford, DE until retirement. She was a Past Worthy Matron of Queen of Sheba Chapter #4, Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliation of Laurel, DE. She loved to travel to National League of Cities with her husband, Henry, a city council member and other elected officials. Dimples’ favorite past-time were family outings and her August family reunions. She especially loved cooking, baking, canning and making homemade root beer for family and friends. Dimples didn’t hesitate to get her hands dirty outside. She loved gardening, planting rose bushes, grapevines and apple and peach trees in her backyard. Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Henry after 52 years of marriage; her parents, Lillian and Preston Leatherberry; step-daughter, Darlene Williams; sisters, Regina, Mable, Kathryn Oneda, Annie, Betty, Heloise, Velma and Doris; brothers, Edward Daniel and Charles Montclair. She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving son, Ralph Alonzo Leatherberry (Marietta “Peaches” Whalen); five grandchildren, Laurie Coleman (Larry) of San Antonio, TX, Erica Drayton of Smyrna, DE, James Whalen, III of Wilmington, DE, Blair Drayton (Babette) of Charleston, SC and Nikova Williams of Laurel, DE; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorthea Elmore of Long Branch, NJ and Dolores Roberta Daniels of Philadelphia, PA; one niece-in-law, Shirley Kilgo and her family of Seaford, DE; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church friends, and numerous other family and friends.
