Velma Carr (L.)

Velma Louise Carr, daughter of the late McGurthay and Louise Mae Carr, was born on August 2, 1925 in the village of Dames Quarter, Maryland. She departed this life peacefully on Friday, October 21, 2016 in the assisted living facility of Somerset Gardens, Princess Anne, Maryland, at the beautiful age of 91. After graduation from Greenwood High School in Princess Anne, she relocated to Baltimore, Maryland where she furthered her education and graduated from Business College. Velma was employed by the Maryland Department of Motor Vehicle Administration beginning February 1, 1961. Her assignment began in the Glen Burnie office, then in the Rockville office. Her final assignment was to open the first office ever MVA in Salisbury, Maryland on Cypress Street in November of 1969. She later retired December 1, 1987 from the new existing MVA facility. She was a faithful member of Macedonia United Methodist Church up until her passing. Her dedication to Macedonia continued even while living in the city of Baltimore. In 1963, she was one of the founders who organized the “Helping Hand Club” which is still being held annually on the fourth Sunday in April. She made her final report as historian on April 24, 2016. Vel was reared in a loving Christian home where everyone was taught to love, respect, and share with each other. Being the fourth of eight siblings, the responsibility of caring for her younger brothers and sisters became one of her duties. Vel never had children of her own. There were times even after we reached maturity, we would have to remind her (lovingly) she was no longer “The Boss.” Her expectations for us and even our children were to see us accept the challenges of life and become the best we could possibly be in spite of adverse circumstances. She leaves behind one sister, Reverend Gertrude B. Brown of Salisbury, Maryland; one devoted nephew, (who was her caretaker) and his family, Robert M. Wilson and wife, Rosalind, of Bowie, Maryland; (daughters) Carra and Alesha Wilson, (son) Regan Wilson, and many other nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Carr of Dover, Delaware and Doretha Carr of Towson, Maryland. Preceding her in death were siblings Clarence, Catherine, Katrina, Joseph, Lillian, and Berley.
