Velda Katrina Ballard

Velda Katrina Ballard, at the age of sixty-five (65), departed this earthly life on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at Tidal Health Hospital in Salisbury, Maryland. She was born to Andrew Hillcrest Dickerson and the late Mildred Ann Savage in Pocomoke City, MD. Velda was educated in Accomack County public schools. At a young age Velda worked at Golden Pride Poultry Company in Stockton, Maryland. She stopped working to take on the role of motherhood, but later returned to work at Hardee’s in Pocomoke, Maryland until her first bout with illness. As the result of her illness, she became disabled and could not continue working. Velda accepted Christ in her 30’s and later in life she attended Eastside Missions Church in Princess Anne, Maryland. Velda was a loving spirt and a prayer warrior who was continuously interceding for her family and friends. As an avid book reader, she accumulated stacks upon stacks of books and magazines. When her sister Brenda would threaten to take and throw some of her books away, she would roll her eyes and Brenda would say, “Good thing her eyes aren’t bullets.” Velda was very intelligent because she soaked up knowledge, the library was the place where she enjoyed going to relax and just browse the different books. When the weather was good, if you couldn’t find Velda at home, just know she was out on her mobility scooter going to or coming from the library. Not only were books her treasures, but you could also find treasures, cash, in her books. Her family knew that books were her hiding place for her stash. She would hide her cash so well that even she would forget in which book she put it. She leaves to cherish loving memories: her sons, Kurk (Lisa), Louis (Shanda) and Jason (Tammy); George Savage, Sr., whom she lovingly called "Daddy"; siblings, Brenda (Curtis), Brinada (Braxton) and Karen; paternal brothers and sisters, Douglas, Sylvia (Johnny), Alan, Curtis (Keia), Baron, Kim, Shameka and Clyde; grandchildren, Kenisha, Deron (who stayed by her side caring for her every step of the way), Takisha, Jason, Kurk, Jr., Adriana, Melvin, Joshua, Jr., Xavier, King, Queens, Peyton, Sammy, and Morgan; great grandchildren, Kyaina, Kalani and Carter; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Velda was preceded in death by: her husband, Norman Ballard; her mother, Mildred Savage; children, Josiah and Antoinette Wallop; siblings, George, Jr. and Jerome Savage; paternal sister Audrey Dennis and great grandson, Elijah. .
