Vanessa Beryl Jones

Vanessa’s Journey When peace like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say it is well, with my soul. For He knows my name. Vanessa Beryl (pronounced Berrell) Jones was born the seventh child to Beatrice L. Jones and the late James S. Jones, Sr. on Tuesday, January 27, 1959, in Pocomoke City, MD. She obediently responded to God’s call of her name as He took her hand in His on Thursday, September 7, 2023. Nessy, as we affectionately called her, was educated in the public schools of Worcester County, graduating from Pocomoke High School with the class of 1977. She was proud to be a Mighty Warrior and an avid basketball fan. She was a cheerleader during her high school years and remained a cheerleader out of uniform as a parent, an aunt and with any child who played the game. While her favorite sports team was the Washington Commanders, her favorite athlete of all time was Michael Jordan. In fact, she amassed an impressive collection of Chicago Bulls’ games on VHS that she often rewatched with her son, fueling his love for the sport. Vanessa was always a hard worker. She worked a full-time job and part-time job(s) for more than twenty years. Places of employment included The Call Center, The Campbell Soup Company, Al-U-Glass, Mid Atlantic, Meatland, and Food City, just to name a few. Her most rewarding employment was with the Worcester County School System -- educating the children at Pocomoke Elementary School for nearly twenty-seven years. Ms. Jones loved her children and had a bonding relationship with her colleagues, touching all their lives in a special way. Her recent retirement (June of 2023) marked an end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, dedication, and unwavering support. Lastly, there’s her Lowe’s family, whom she loved dearly -- especially her supervisor, Scott, whom she thought she was his boss! Vanessa served on Pocomoke City’s Board of Elections Supervisors from 2010 to 2015. Eventually, she made the decision to step down from her position to create an opportunity for her nephew, Todd, to join the Board. Christian Walk: Vanessa was saved and baptized at the age of 12 by the late Bishop Isaac Jenkins, Sr. Vanessa loved her family, her New Macedonia church family, and more importantly, she loved God. She was a past member of the Pastor’s Support Team. Her favorite singing group was the James Family Gospel Singers, and her favorite song was, “My Soul Is Anchored.” Family: Vanessa adored family. The twinkle in her eyes came from her son, Corey. Corey made her happy by finding the woman of his dreams and marrying her in June of 2022. Vanessa took on the responsibility, without hesitation, of taking care of her elderly Mother, her ill sister, Sandra and assisted with her nephew, Patrick. Her dedication and devotion to them was unmatched. She was always her nieces’ and nephews’ greatest fan, encouraging and supporting them. Vanessa’s other family was Lucille Ball, yes, the red-haired actress starring in the “I Love Lucy” sitcom. She loved her character and possessed every episode ever aired. Vanessa’s passing has left such a huge void in her family that cannot be filled. Left with loving memories are: her son, Corey D. Jones and his wife Paris Jones of Temple Hills, MD; her mother, Beatrice L. Jones of Pocomoke City, MD; siblings, Barbara (William) Schoolfield, Deborah Graves, James Jones, Jr., Sandra Nock and Steven (Alice) Jones, all of Pocomoke City, MD, Arlene (Raymond) Ginn, Shelia (Andrew) Jackson and Valerie King, all of Salisbury, MD, Darnell (Helena) Jones of Providence Forge, VA and Troy (Renee) Jones of Upper Marlboro, MD; a godson, Jermaine (Lisa) Ayres of Pocomoke City, MD; great godson, Brice McMichael; best friends, Janet Bivens, Annette Archer-Bell, Sherry Wilkinson, Toni Malone and Peggy Dickerson and extended sisters, Darlene Dennis, Darlene Schoolfield, Carolyn Lawrence, and Sheila Ayres. In addition, Vanessa leaves to mourn their loss her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Preceding Vanessa in death were her father, James S. Jones, Sr., Avery Nelson, Sr. and Donna Jones.
