THELMA’S JOURNEY Thelma Coretta “Gaines” Hunt Cannon, also known as “Sissy,” was born on December 13, 1939, to the late William and Mary Elizabeth Gaines in Rock Hall, Maryland. God lovingly pulled back the curtain of Heaven on Thursday, September 2, 2020, and called our beautiful angel home to her eternal rest. She was educated in the Kent County, Rock Hall, MD education system. She moved to Head of Creek, MD, at the age of sixteen (16), where she was raised by her sister-in-law, the late Sarah Warner. Although she had many jobs, she was well known as the Daycare Mother.” She raised many children in Salisbury, MD. A day did not go by when one of the children she raised wouldn’t come by to say hello. Since 1999, Thelma was a dedicated, faithful, loyal, and quiet member of St. James Free Methodist Church under the leadership of Reverend Louis L. Reid, Sr. After her baptism in 2001, she would often tell anyone who listened, “Being baptized was a life-changing experience; you gotta try Him.” Especially when she listened to the hymn, “Cooling Water,” the Holy Ghost would come upon her, and then she would cut her little “two-step” and sit down. Two of her favorite hymns were “May The Work I’ve Done Speak For Me” and she enjoyed hearing Brother Howard Robinson sing, “I Am Redeemed,” where she would often slip into praise and thank God that He changed her life. Her favorite past time was cooking and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and family. Thelma also enjoyed hosting family dinners and random get-togethers at her home. Being home and surrounded by family filled Thelma’s heart with an abundance of joy and love. On Sunday morning, she made sure she was dressed sharply and ready for church. Sunday dinner was prepared on Saturday. One of her favorite lines to tell everyone before getting off the telephone with her sweet, caring, and loving voice was, “I love you more.” She never missed an opportunity to tell you she loved you. Thelma truly had a heart of gold. When Thelma saw others in need, she would give what she had and do without. She never complained or said no; she was a “Woman of God.” When God pulled the curtain back, Thelma C. Cannon made sure she saw her family for the last time. Then her Heavenly Father took her by the hand and led her home to eternal life. Thelma leaves precious memories behind with: two special friends with whom she shared a special sister-like bond, Pearl Harmon and Vivian Harmon, both of Salisbury, MD; five children, Doris (David) Gaines-Frazier and Antionelle Hunt, both of Salisbury, MD, Antoinette (Clifford) Brice of Stone Mountain, GA and Theodore (Theresa) Hunt, Jr., and Paulette Hunt, both of Salisbury, MD; two nephews (raised as her sons), Robert Gaines of Baltimore, MD and Larry “Goober” Gaines of Fruitland, MD, for whom she had a special love; eleven grandchildren, Summer (Milord) Payen, Deltez (Nicole) Jackson, Theodore (Rochelle) Hunt Ill, Brandie Deal, Dante Selby, Willie Ballard, Tycara Simpson, Tinecka (Brandon) White, Tyler Hunt and Jamal Church, all of Salisbury, MD and Minister Lavonte Hunt of Chester, VA as well as thirty-five great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Thelma was preceded in death by: her husband, Rodney T. Cannon; two brothers, William Warner and Stanley Gaines; two sisters, Pearl Gaines and Alice Jenkins and one grandson, Tyran Drummond.
