Preston T. Sturgis

Obituary “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?“ (Psalm 27:1) On Saturday, March 10, 2018, the Lord, in His infinite wisdom, sent his angels to take the soul of his child, PRESTON THOMAS STURGIS, SR., our beloved husband and father, to eternal rest at Heritage Hall Nursing Care Facility in Nassawadox, Virginia. Preston was born on September 16, 1937 to the union of the late Purnell and Catherine Mapp Sturgis, Sr. He was reared in the area of his birth Painter, Virginia. Three brothers, Julius, Johnny and June, predeceased him. Preston received his formal education in Accomack County Public Schools in Accomack County, Virginia. Throughout his journey along the road called life, he has worn many hats and touched the lives of many people. He was always an outdoors person and he thoroughly enjoyed working outside. His productive years were spent laboring as a waterman, farmer, landscaper and was co-owner of a mobile home set up and demolition business. On July 24, 1961, Preston married the love of his life, Corine Wyatt Sturgis. Six children were born to this union-Linwood, Preston Jr., Milton, Lisa, Kevin and Towanda. Preston a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He did his best for his family and loved ones. He enjoyed the beauty and happiness of life and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with family and friends and looked forward to going on the family cruises. He also was a member of the Eagle Riders Motorcycle Club for many years. His kind and caring manner, vibrant personality and willingness to help others were his personal qualities we shall always miss. However, in many ways, he will always be with us, for we know that memories are a gift from God that will keep “Preston” forever in our hearts. He leaves precious memories with: his loving wife of almost 57 years, Corine Sturgis; children, Linwood of Painter, VA, Preston Jr. (Hilda) of Melfa, VA, Milton of Painter, VA, Lisa Sturgis and Kevin (Emma), both of North Carolina, and Towanda Smith (Cory) of Painter, VA; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Purnell Sturgis Jr.; five sisters, Edna Coles of Painter, VA, Georgia Harmon of Dale City, VA, Annie Reid and Juanita Sturgis, both of Painter, VA and Joan Clifford; sisters-in-law, Ethel Sturgis and Louise Harmon; brother-in-law, David Wyatt; special cousins, Howard Jones and Julius Bailey and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and the Painter community. He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all his family and friends. Rest in peace, and know that you were loved here on earth by family and friends, but God our Father in heaven loves you the best.
