Sylvia J. Miles

Sylvia Jane Miles was born on Monday, February 2, 1925, in Seaford, Delaware, to Celeste Wright, who later married James Thompson, who loved Sylvia as his own. Sylvia was the middle child of three siblings. On Tuesday evening, January 5, 2021, in the presence of her loving family, she departed this life at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital, Dover, Delaware, following a brief illness. She was 95 years young. Sylvia received her formal education in the Seaford School District, though she gained a rich educational experience through the school of hard knocks. As she came of age, God blessed her with the first four of her seven children, Charles, Robert, Sheila and Lester. Then, on September 5, 1956, she married the love of her life, Alphonso Miles, Sr., in Dover. Through that special union, God blessed them with three additional children, Alphonso, Jr., Eva, and Arlene. In the early 1950’s, Sylvia officially began her employment history cleaning at Kent General Hospital and by serving as a cook at Dinner Bell Inn in Dover. During that timeframe, she also wore many other hats, as she worked in various other jobs. Finally, she began working for Playtex and remained there for over 30 years, until she retired. Over the years, Sylvia attended a number of churches, primarily Whatcoat United Methodist Church and Emmanuel Deliverance Ministries, both in Dover. One of her greatest passions was cooking, and she especially loved to entertain family and friends, alike, and fed them whatever she had cooked up for the day. She made a comfortable home for her family, and she enjoyed inviting others to join with the family for fun and celebrations. Sylvia had a beautiful personality, as she was fun-loving and had a great sense of humor. She was easy-going, and she always had a smile on her face. She never met a stranger and was friendly to everyone she met. Her husband, children, and grandchildren, were her highest priority, as they gave her much happiness and reasons to laugh. In addition to her parents, Sylvia was preceded in death by two sons, Charles Washington and Robert Henderson; two siblings, Marie Brooks and Amos Robinson; great-grandson, Thomas Cottingham; brother-in-law, Wesley Loper; and her special family member and friend, Ethel Shockley. Sylvia leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Alphonso Miles, Sr., Dover; five children, Sheila Robinson, Dover; Bishop Lester Jones (Brenda), Dover; Alphonso Miles, Jr. (Jerry), Dover; Eva Miles, Dover and Arlene Eason (Chris), Winston-Salem, NC; 17 grand-children, Shawn Robinson, Jacqui Irvin (Irv), Thomas Robinson, Teena Robinson, Samuel Wilson, III, De’Anna Batson, Timothy Cannon, Tanya Fruits, Nicole Miles, Jeff Berry, Demingo Miles, Tyrone Miles (Tanya), Vanell “Tootie” Waters, Mary Frances Tilghman, Valerie Henderson, Tracey Henderson, and Sylvia Warren; two special great-grandchildren, Tyianna Miles and Dominique Miles; 33 additional, beautiful great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Kennedy, Dover and Simmie Mayo Loper, Reading, PA; a special niece, Leslie Ingram; a special nephew, Robert Sullivan; a special friend, Sam Wilson, Sr., Delaware City, DE; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends.
