Stephen Allen Smith

On Sunday October 27,2024, Stephen Allen Smith, 69, of Salisbury, Maryland was called to his eternal heavenly home. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by comfort and the love of his family. Stephen was born on September 20, 1955 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center (now Tidal Health) to the late Arthur and Luetta Smith of Salisbury, Maryland. He received his education through the Wicomico County Public School System, and was a graduate of Wicomico Senior High School class of 1973. Stephen, affectionally called Pop, Stevie, or Gator to those close to him, enjoyed cooking. He often catered many dinners, church events, and prided himself on his cooking skills. He worked various jobs in the beginning of his career including what was once the Sherrington Hotel and in the kitchen at Peninsula Regional Medical Center (now Tidal Health). He later began his career in the military, joining the Army. During his time in the military, he served in Desert Storm, before later retiring from the National Guard after 26 years of service. After retiring from the military, Stephen began another career at Eastern Shore Correctional Institution as a dietary correction officer. He later retired after over twenty years of service. Stephen loved his family! He was a devoted husband, father, brother, son, uncle among various other roles he has played in the lives of others. He was married to his wife, Anita Smith (deceased) before her passing in 1998. He fathered five children: Mari Smith-Cooper (Andre Cooper, deceased) of Chester, Pennsylvania, Stephanie Anne Smith(deceased), Danielle Smith Johnson (Michael Johnson) of Salisbury, Maryland, Erica Smith of Salisbury, Maryland, and Lamont Smith of Salisbury, Maryland. He loved the Lord, and would often share stories of his faith with others. Before his health decline, Stephen, attended New Hope Baptist Church. He served on the usher board, and also would volunteer to cook with the kitchen crew for church events. Coming from a loving family, he was a wonderful father to not only his own children, but to his children’s friends or anyone that needed a father. He was always there for a word of encouragement or just a good laugh. He would often tell stories of the various trophies that he won while fighting in karate. His love for life, has created several precious moments that have individually touched those close to him. Stephen leaves to cherish his memory: three daughters: Mari Smith-Cooper (Andre Cooper, deceased), of Chester, Philadelphia, Danielle Smith Johnson (Michael Johnson) of Salisbury, Maryland, and Erica Smith of Salisbury, Maryland. One son, Lamont Smith, of Salisbury, Maryland. Seven grandchildren: Andre’a Cooper, DaMichael Johnson, Daniya Johnson, Donyae Johnson, Zyniah Bowen, Omar’i Thomas, and Za’Nae Bowen. One sister, Donzella Smith of Silver Spring, Maryland. Mother-in-law, Martha White (Elmer White, deceased), of Princess Anne, Maryland. Two sister-in-law’s: Maria Hall (Sylvester Hall) of Princess Anne, Maryland and Sheliah Schoolfield(Kenneth Schoolfield) of Pocomoke City, Maryland. Two brother-in-law’s: Elmer White of Princess Anne, Maryland and Leon White of Princess Anne, Maryland, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In addition to his wife, Anita Smith, Stephen was proceeded in death by his parents: Arthur and Luetta Smith; one daughter, Stephanie Anne Smith; one grandson, Zakkai Trae Bowen; one sister: Jaunesta Cannon; one brother-in-law Wallace Cannon; two sister- in- law’s :Deborah Finney and Sharail Kersey(Nathan Kersey); one father-in-law, Elmer White, and one son-in-law Andre Cooper.
